CHAPTER 2: THE ANATOMY OF A MONSTER

The moment the name left my lips, Ethan’s entire posture shifted.
The warmth in his eyes completely vanished, replaced by an icy, calculated stillness that was infinitely more terrifying than any outward display of anger. His finger dropped from my chin, and his hands balled into tight fists at his sides, the fabric of his tailored tuxedo jacket straining against his shoulders.
"Adrian Vaughn," Ethan repeated the name slowly, as if ensuring each syllable was locked into his memory for execution.
"Mr. Carter, please," I said, urgently pulling the black silk shirt over my head, finally covering the bruises, though the fabric felt rough against my swollen skin. I quickly buttoned it up with trembling fingers, tucking it into my formal evening skirt. "You can't do anything tonight. You can't let anyone know. The hospital expansion relies entirely on the Vaughn Family Medical Group's partnership. If you alienate them, the funding for the pediatric wing collapses. Millions of dollars for sick children will vanish."
Ethan let out a short, humorless laugh that sent a chill straight down my spine. He turned his back to me for a moment, running a hand through his dark hair, pacing the short distance of the dressing room like a caged predator.
"Do you honestly think I care about a medical partnership right now, Julianne?" he asked, turning back to face me. His gray eyes were dark, almost black beneath the lights. "You have been sitting at the desk outside my office for eleven months. You have arrived at 6:00 a.m. every single day. You have memorized my coffee order, handled my private banking, managed my family’s trust, and bled yourself dry to ensure my life runs flawlessly. And all this time, you were going home to a man who puts his hands on you?"
"I had it under control," I whispered, looking down as I zipped up the side of my skirt.
"This is not under control!" Ethan roared, his voice finally cracking through the soundproofed walls of the suite. He stepped into my personal space again, his breathing heavy. "Look at your arms, Julianne! Look at your ribs! He is breaking you, piece by piece, and you are standing here protecting my foundation's charity gala?"
"I am protecting my family!" I snapped back, my own buried anger finally flaring to the surface. I looked up at him, tears streaming down my cheeks, my professional demeanor entirely gone. "You don't understand how he works, Ethan! He doesn't just hit me. He calculates it. He chooses places that can be hidden by clothing. He knows exactly how much pressure to apply without fracturing a bone. And if I leave him, if I say a single word, he will ruin my younger brother’s career before it even begins. He has the board of the university hospital in his pocket. He told me he would make sure Leo never gets a residency anywhere in this country!"
Ethan watched me, his expression softening just a fraction at the mention of my brother, but the underlying coldness remained. "He told you that?"
"Yes," I wiped my face frantically with the back of my hand, trying to preserve what little makeup I had left. "He reminds me every single day of how powerful he is. He tells me I'm just a glorified secretary, that nobody would believe an assistant over a world-renowned pediatric surgeon who saves lives on television. To the world, he is a saint. To the media, we are the perfect high-society couple. If I break the engagement tonight, right before he is honored, he will destroy everything I love. I just need to get through tonight. I have a plan to get Leo transferred to a European hospital next month. Once he’s safe out of the country, I’m leaving Adrian. I just... I just needed twenty more days."
Ethan stood completely still, absorbing my words. The sheer intelligence that had made him a self-made billionaire at thirty-four was visibly at work behind his eyes. He wasn't just angry anymore; he was analyzing the battlefield. He was looking at Adrian Vaughn not as a prominent community figure, but as a target that needed to be systematically liquidated.
"Twenty days is twenty days too long," Ethan said, his voice dropping into that quiet, terrifying register again. He reached out, his large hands carefully grasping my shoulders, avoiding the areas where he knew the bruises lay. "He will not touch you again, Julianne. Not tonight. Not tomorrow. Not ever."
"Ethan, you can't stop the gala—"
"I’m not stopping the gala," Ethan said, a slow, predatory smile touching the corners of his lips, though his eyes remained entirely dead. "The gala is going to proceed exactly as planned. Dr. Adrian Vaughn is going to get all the attention he has ever dreamed of. He wants to be a hero in front of the city's elite? I am going to give him the biggest stage of his life."
I stared at him, my heart pounding for an entirely different reason now. "What are you going to do?"
"I am going to do what I do best," Ethan whispered, his gaze dropping to my lips for a fraction of a second before returning to my eyes. "I am going to execute a hostile takeover of his entire existence."
Before I could ask for clarification, a sharp knock sounded on the dressing room door.
"Mr. Carter?" the voice of Marcus, Ethan's head of security, called out from the hallway. "The VIP guests have been seated at the head tables. The media line is wrapped around the block. Dr. Vaughn and his parents have just arrived in the lobby. They are asking for Ms. Vance to join them for the arrival photographs."
I stiffened, a primal wave of panic washing over me at the mention of Adrian’s name. My hand automatically went to my bruised ribs.
Ethan felt the tension in my shoulders. He didn't let go of me. He looked directly into my eyes, his grip grounding me, pulling me back from the edge of the abyss.
"Marcus," Ethan called out over his shoulder, his voice completely steady, commanding, and flawless. "Tell Dr. Vaughn that Julianne is currently finalizing the executive briefing for my opening speech. She will meet him directly inside the ballroom at Table One in ten minutes."
May you like
"Understood, sir," Marcus replied, his footsteps fading down the hall.
Ethan looked back at me, his face inches from mine. "Go to the restroom. Fix your makeup. Put on the highest heels you own, Julianne. Walk into that ballroom with your head held high, because tonight is the very last night you will ever have to pretend to be beneath anyone."
