Chapter 6 - The Bail Hearing Reckoning

Sitting in a high-security holding facility without money or freedom broke what was left of their family unit.

By the second week of pretrial detention, the pressure from prosecutors began to fracture the wall of silence between Carter and Eleanor.

Detective Miller visited me at the hospital on a Friday afternoon, holding two separate interrogation transcripts.

“They’ve turned on each other,” Miller declared, setting the papers on my bedside tray.

“What happened?” I asked.

“Once Carter realized he was facing the lethal injection,” Miller explained, “his lawyer filed a motion offering a deal: Carter would plead guilty to manslaughter if he testified that Eleanor was the mastermind who orchestrated the abuse.”

A bitter laugh escaped my chest. “He’s throwing his own mother under the bus to save his neck.”

“And Eleanor did the exact same thing three hours later,” Miller added with a grin.

“Her lawyer submitted an affidavit claiming Eleanor was merely an elderly, passive observer who was terrified of her son’s violent outbursts. She claims Carter forced her to sharpen those tools under threat of physical violence.”

“They are both monsters,” I said flatly. “Neither of them was forced. They enjoyed every single second of it.”

“The prosecutor turned down both deal offers,” Miller assured me. “We aren't making deals with either of them. We’re taking both of them to a joint capital trial in sixty days.”

While they rotted in their separate cells, my advocate Elena worked tirelessly to secure my independence. Using the frozen marital assets, Elena secured a court order granting me full temporary emergency distribution of Carter’s liquid wealth to pay for my medical bills, trauma recovery therapy, and safe housing.

For the first time in my life, I had my own bank account, my own legal representation, and complete control over my own destiny.
