Chapter 6 - The Siege on the Docks

At 2:00 a.m., heavy fog rolled off Biscayne Bay, smothering the industrial shipping container yards of Overtown in a thick, grey shroud.
Inside a converted three-story brick warehouse at Pier 14, Lorenzo Moretti sat at a long steel table counting stacks of banded hundred-dollar bills. He was fifty years old, broad-shouldered, with slicked-back grey hair and a sharp, fox-like face.
Fourteen heavily armed guards stood around the warehouse floor, carrying tactical rifles, watching the perimeter camera monitors.
"The shipment from New York comes in at dawn," Lorenzo told his top enforcer, a scarred brute named Hector. "Once the Valenti family takes delivery of the North Miami docks, Sebastián Varro will be completely isolated. By next week, we move on his mansion, eliminate his guards, and take the entire city."
"What about Varro's kid?" Hector asked, lighting a cigarette. "The crazy little brat?"
Lorenzo smirked, taking a sip of scotch. "The kid is a brain-damaged vegetable. He screams at his own shadow. Once Sebastián is dead, we put the kid in a state asylum in Okeechobee where nobody will ever hear him again."
Suddenly, the warehouse security monitors went dead, flickering into static one by one.
"What the hell?" Hector grunted, reaching for his radio. "Gate three, report."
Silence answered over the comm-link.
BOOM!
The massive corrugated steel doors at the front of the warehouse were blown completely off their hinges by a massive C4 explosive charge. The concussive shockwave shattered every window on the ground floor, sending a cloud of blinding dust and iron shrapnel flying across the room.
Before the dust could settle, flashbang grenades slammed onto the concrete floor.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
Blinding white light and deafening concussive booms disoriented Lorenzo's guards.
Through the smoke stepped Sebastián Varro.
He wore a dark tactical vest over his black shirt, a silenced submachine gun held in his broad hands. Behind him, thirty elite Varro operatives poured through the ruined entrance like an army of ghosts, unleashing a hail of suppressed, lethal fire.
The gunfight was short, violent, and devastatingly precise.
Lorenzo’s guards, caught entirely by surprise, were cut down in seconds. Hector tried to raise his rifle, but Sebastián drove two rounds through his chest without missing a step, stepping over the dying man as he advanced straight toward the steel table.
Lorenzo scrambled backward, his face drained of all color, reaching frantically for a pistol hidden under the table.
Sebastián reached him in three long strides, grabbed Lorenzo by his grey hair, and slammed his face brutally into the steel tabletop.
CRACK!
Blood sprayed across the stacks of hundred-dollar bills as Lorenzo’s nose shattered. He screamed, dropping his pistol, clutching his broken face.
Sebastián dragged him off the chair by his collar, hauling him across the concrete floor toward the center of the warehouse, throwing him down onto his knees like a dog.
Rafe and the remaining Varro soldiers surrounded the perimeter, securing the exits, their weapons pointed at the floor, leaving the center of the room to their boss.
Sebastián stood over his former lieutenant, his tactical boots dripping with rain and grease. He reached into his vest, pulled out a small digital tablet, and tossed it onto the concrete in front of Lorenzo.
On the screen, playing on a loop, was the restored traffic video of Lorenzo's custom trident-rimmed sedan forcing Elena's car off the bridge.
Lorenzo looked at the screen, his eyes wide with frantic, panting terror. His breath hitched in his throat.
"Sebastián..." Lorenzo wheezed through his bloody mouth, raising his hands in a desperate plea. "Sebastián, listen to me... Valenti forced my hand! They threatened my family in Nassau! They said if I didn't give them the docks, they'd kill my daughters!"
Sebastián knelt down on one knee, bringing his dark, terrifying face inches from Lorenzo's.
"You sat at my dinner table," Sebastián whispered, his voice dangerously soft, laced with a coldness that froze the blood in Lorenzo's veins. "You drank my wine. You hugged my son. And then you pushed his mother into the dark water and left him to drown."
"I'm sorry!" Lorenzo sobbed, weeping hysterical, bloody tears. "Please, Sebastián! For twenty years I bled for you! Give me mercy!"
"Mercy?" Sebastián repeated softly. "My son didn't speak a single word for ten months because of you. He screamed every time a man walked into his room because he thought you were coming back to kill him."
Sebastián stood up smoothly. He pulled a heavy, unsuppressed custom .45 caliber pistol from his holster.
"You don't get mercy, Lorenzo," Sebastián said coldly. "You get justice."
THUD.
A single shot echoed through the massive warehouse, cutting off Lorenzo Moretti’s pleas forever.
Sebastián didn't look at the body. He holstered his weapon, wiped a speck of dust from his sleeve, and turned toward Rafe.
"Burn this place to the ground," Sebastián ordered. "Every container, every file, every vehicle. Erase Moretti from this city."
"Understood, Don Varro," Rafe replied with a crisp nod.
Sebastián walked out into the cool night air, leaving the burning warehouse behind him. For ten long months, he had been a man hollowed out by grief and guilt. But as he stepped into his waiting vehicle, the heavy weight on his chest felt lighter.
