Chapter 5 - Malcolm's Last Stand & Victoria's Mask Slips

The hospital room felt as though the oxygen had been entirely sucked out of it.

Malcolm Calloway’s posture stiffened into rigid denial, though a fine sheen of cold sweat now glistened on his upper lip. He looked around the room, desperately seeking an ally among the doctors and security guards, but Dr. Shaw was staring at the floor, suddenly deeply interested in the shattered porcelain of Victoria’s coffee cup.

“You’ve been asleep for eight months, Ethan,” Malcolm said, his voice dropping into a harsh, conspiratorial whisper as he closed the distance between them. “Your mind is playing tricks on you. Post-coma psychosis is a well-documented neurological phenomenon. You’re imagining a conspiracy because you can’t accept that I stepped in to keep Calloway Biomedical afloat while you were rotting in this bed.”

Ethan didn't flinch. He stood two inches taller than his uncle, towering over him with a terrifying, absolute calm.

“Post-coma psychosis?” Ethan repeated softly. “Is that what you’re going to tell the SEC when they audit the three million dollars transferred from the R&D division to your offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands last month?”

Malcolm’s breath hitched. The carefully constructed facade of the benevolent patriarch shattered completely.

“You... you couldn't have known that,” Malcolm stammered, stepping back. “The files were encrypted—”

“Everything said in this room for the past two hundred and forty days echoed against these walls, Malcolm,” Ethan interrupted, his voice dropping an octave into a register of pure ice. “I heard you discussing my funeral arrangements while my heart was still beating. I heard you plotting with Victoria to rewrite my living will. And worst of all... I heard you laughing when you thought I’d never wake up.”

Victoria could no longer contain her fury. The ice-cold debutante exterior melted away, revealing a desperate, vicious shrew. She lunged forward, her nails curled like claws, aiming directly for Ethan’s face.

“You ungrateful bastard!” Victoria screamed. “I stood by you! I wore your ring! I suffered through society galas pretending to mourn a man who was already a vegetable! You owe me everything! Without me, you’re nothing!”

Before Victoria could reach him, Owen stepped in front of Ethan, instinctively shielding him just as he shielded Lily.

Ethan moved with lightning speed—a reflex born of his sudden, furious adrenaline spike. He caught Victoria’s wrist mid-air, twisting her arm back just enough to halt her momentum, his grey eyes blazing with absolute contempt.

“You wore my ring because it came with a penthouse and a trust fund, Victoria,” Ethan said, his voice hissing through clenched teeth. “And now you’re going to strip it off and leave this hospital with nothing more than the clothes on your back. Because if you ever come within a mile of my children or me again, I will personally spend every cent of my fortune making sure you spend the next ten years in a federal penitentiary.”

He shoved her back hard. Victoria tripped over her own ruined heels, crashing heavily into the arms of a terrified security guard.

“Get them out of my sight,” Ethan commanded, pointing a steady finger toward Malcolm and Victoria. “And call corporate legal. Tell them I want every single document, every contract, and every proxy vote signed in my absence audited, revoked, and filed as corporate fraud by 8:00 AM tomorrow.”

Malcolm’s face twisted into an ugly, snarling mask of pure hatred. He pointed a shaking finger at Ethan.

“You’re finished, Ethan! You think you can waltz back into the boardroom after eight months of brain damage and take on the entire board? They’ll vote you out! They’ll declare you mentally unfit! You’ve lost everything!”

“I haven't lost a damn thing,” Ethan replied coldly. “I just found what matters.”

With two security guards gripping his arms and Malcolm shouting obscenities, the disgraced uncle and the ruined fiancée were dragged out of the room, their desperate protests echoing down the quiet hallway until the heavy double doors swung shut.

Silence descended upon the suite once more.

Ethan slowly turned around.

Grace was still standing by the door, her arms wrapped tightly around Owen and Lily, her chest rising and falling in shallow, rapid breaths. She looked at Ethan not with anger, but with an overwhelming, fragile vulnerability, as if she were looking at a ghost she had finally touched in the daylight.

Ethan took a step toward them, his hands shaking.

“Grace,” he whispered, his voice breaking. “Please... don't run away again.”
