Chapter 8 - The Table for Four

One year after that stormy night on the roof, the sun hung low over the Columbus skyline, casting a golden amber glow across the newly remodeled Northstar terrace.String lights twinkled overhead. The scent of roasted rosemary chicken and fresh garden salad drifted from the catering stations.

At the center of the terrace sat a private table—larger than the others, draped in soft white linen, reserved not just for Tuesdays, but for tonight: a celebration of Northstar Robotics’ tenth anniversary.

Four chairs surrounded the table.

One was a custom-fitted titanium wheelchair, resting comfortably at the head.

Beside it sat Mason, wearing a well-tailored navy suit that looked far more comfortable than his old contractor overalls. Across from them sat Lucy, now officially inducted as Northstar’s youngest honorary advisory board member, busy sketching a new prototype drone on her digital tablet.

And in the fourth chair—a seat that had remained empty for years of grief, isolation, and survival—sat a quiet sense of unconditional belonging.

Claire raised her glass of sparkling cider, her eyes sweeping across the crowded terrace filled with hundreds of laughing, connected employees. Northstar wasn't just a corporation anymore; it was a community.

She turned to the three people beside her.

“To new foundations,” Claire said softly.

Mason smiled, lifting his glass to meet hers with a gentle clink. “To building them together.”

Lucy tapped her juice box against their glasses, grinning ear to ear. “And to never eating alone!”

They drank as the evening breeze swept across the rooftop, carrying away the echoes of the past and welcoming a future built on courage, honesty, and love. Claire looked down at the original crayon drawing, safely framed and hanging on her office wall just inside the glass doors—Nobody eats alone on Tuesdays—and realized that some rules, once written by a child, are powerful enough to change the world.
