Chapter 4 - The Shadow of Sterling

While Daniel wept in federal custody, the real earthquake was happening outside the precinct doors.

Richard Sterling, billionaire real estate magnate and proud patriarch of the Sterling family, discovered within twelve hours of the wedding arrest that his prized corporate empire was inextricably linked to Daniel’s financial crimes.

It turned out Daniel hadn't just stolen my savings and taken out a life insurance policy on me; he had been using embezzled funds from Sterling Enterprises’ regional accounts to finance his lavish lifestyle with Vanessa, his secret offshore accounts, and even the very wedding we had just disrupted.

By Tuesday morning, the stock of Sterling Enterprises dropped six percent within twenty minutes of the opening bell.

I sat in my temporary office at the federal courthouse—a small, windowless room littered with case files, laptop chargers, and empty cans of diet soda—when the door swung open without a knock.

Vanessa stood in the doorway. She was still wearing a wrinkled designer trench coat over her traveling clothes, her mascara smudged beneath swollen, angry eyes. Gone was the untouchable socialite of the wedding ballroom; she looked hollowed out, furious, and utterly humiliated.

“You did this,” Vanessa hissed, stepping into the room and slamming the door behind her. “You planned every single second of it.”

I didn't look up from my laptop keyboard, where I was finalizing the asset-recovery forfeiture schedule for our joint accounts. “Shut the door on your way out, Vanessa. You’re letting the cold air in.”

“My father is ruined!” she shrieked, marching right up to my desk and slamming her palm against the wood. “Our family name is being dragged through every tabloid in the country! The board is voting to strip my father of his CEO title by the end of the week! All because of a gold-digging nobody who couldn't accept that her husband didn't love her anymore!”

I finally stopped typing. I slowly leaned back in my chair, folding my hands over my lap, and looked up at her with a calm so absolute it made her flinch.

“Let’s get a few facts straight, Vanessa,” I said, my voice quiet and steady. “Your father isn't ruined because of me. He’s ruined because he spent thirty years building an empire of yes-men and corporate parasites—starting with the man you were so desperate to steal from my bed.”

Vanessa’s lips curled in disgust. “He never loved you. He told me you were cold, boring, obsessive—that you spent all your time looking at spreadsheets while he wanted a real partner.”

“Is that what he told you while he was spending my inheritance on your diamond tennis bracelet?” I raised an eyebrow, picking up a printed bank statement from the corner of my desk and sliding it across the blotter. “Because according to these wire transfers, Daniel wasn't just funding your lifestyle—he was embezzling directly from your father’s corporate retirement fund to pay off your personal gambling debts in Atlantic City.”

Vanessa snatched the paper off the desk, her eyes scanning the columns of numbers. As she read, her face drained of whatever color she had managed to restore after the wedding debacle. Her breathing hitched.

“That’s... that’s impossible,” she whispered, her hands shaking as the paper fluttered to the floor. “Daniel said those funds came from his tech investments...”

“Daniel was a mid-level risk analyst who couldn't balance a checkbook without my oversight,” I said coldly. “He used you just as much as he used me, Vanessa. The only difference is that I survived his attempt to murder me. You just bought front-row tickets to his sinking ship.”

She stared at me, the arrogant socialite facade completely crumbling, leaving behind a terrified young woman who realized she had been played by an expert predator.

Without another word, Vanessa turned on her heel, wrenched the door open, and ran down the corridor, her heels clicking frantically against the marble floor.

I watched her go, felt a brief, passing pang of pity, and then turned back to my screen. There were still fifty accounts to freeze, and my daughter was waiting for me at home with pancakes and cartoons.
