Chapter 6 - The Weight of Inheritance

Richard stared at the paper as if it were a venomous snake. The realization that he had completely lost control—not just of his business, but of his home, his status, and his family—finally broke his fragile defiance.
He sank slowly onto the entryway bench, burying his face in his hands. A dry, pathetic sob escaped his throat.
“I have nowhere to go,” Richard muttered, his voice muffled by his palms. “My accounts are frozen. My friends won't answer my calls. Rosalind refuses to speak to me.”
“That,” Ethan said without an ounce of sympathy, “is the natural consequence of building a life based entirely on lies. You spent twenty years treating people like disposable assets. Now you’re finding out what it feels like to be discarded.”
Margaret walked slowly toward the entryway, stopping a few feet away from the man she had been legally bound to for nearly three decades. There was no anger left in her heart—only a profound, weightless sense of release. The invisible chains she had carried since her thirties had finally snapped.
“I signed the initial divorce papers this morning, Richard,” Margaret said quietly. “Our attorney will handle the remaining asset division. By the end of the week, our legal ties will be completely severed.”
Richard looked up, his eyes wide with a pathetic glimmer of hope. “Margaret... please. We’ve been together for thirty-seven years. You can’t just throw me away.”

“I didn't throw you away, Richard,” Margaret replied, her voice firm and clear. “I simply stopped holding up the weight of your lies.”
She turned away from him, walking back into the living room where Ethan stood waiting. Together, they walked past the man who had tried to define their lives, leaving him alone in the quiet hallway of a house he no longer owned.
