Chapter 4 - The Shattered Facade

Saturday arrived with a heat wave that shimmered off the pavement, a fitting backdrop for the inferno I was about to ignite. The house was full of guests, mostly business associates of Julian’s father. It was a gala of pretense, full of expensive wine, forced laughter, and the sharp, clinking sound of crystal.

I wore a simple white dress, a contrast to the dark, ugly truth I carried in my bag—a digital recorder linked to my phone, and a legal document I had prepared with Elena’s help, a request for emergency protective custody.

The plan was simple: keep the kids in my sight at all times, get the recordings, and then trigger the chaos. But the plan hit a snag when Teresa grabbed Valeria’s wrist during the cake cutting.

"She needs to go downstairs," Teresa hissed, her smile not reaching her cold, predatory eyes. "It's time for her lesson."

My heart stopped, then resumed at a frantic pace. I walked over, my hand moving to the small canister of pepper spray I’d hidden in my clutch. "She’s staying here, Teresa. It’s her birthday."

"Don't be difficult, Mariana," Monica chimed in, stepping up behind me, her nails digging into my arm. "She’s a child. She needs to learn her place."

Julian was across the room, laughing with his father. He hadn't noticed. He was so busy being the golden boy that he didn't see his wife being cornered.

I took a deep breath. Now.

I slammed the recording device on the table, loud enough for the nearby guests to hear. "Place? You want to talk about her place? Why don't we ask her about the basement?"

The room went silent. Julian froze, his glass mid-air. Teresa’s face drained of color, replaced by a mask of pure, unadulterated fury. "Mariana, you’re making a scene."

"I'm making a record," I retorted. I turned to the guests. "Did you know that this family uses a basement as a prison for children? Did you know they use their construction company to launder money? I have every recording, every document, every bank transfer."

The shock lasted only a second before Gerard lunged for me. He was fast, but I was prepared. I sprayed the pepper spray directly into his eyes, his scream echoing through the grand hall. Chaos erupted. Guests began to scatter, recording the scene on their phones.

I grabbed Valeria and Matthew, pulling them toward the front door. Julian finally moved, trying to block us. "Mariana, what the hell are you doing? Stop this!"

"I'm saving them from you!" I screamed.

Just as the security guards tried to reach us, the front door burst open. It wasn't the police—not yet. It was Elena, accompanied by a local TV news crew she had tipped off. The cameras were rolling, capturing the entire scene: the chaos, the desperate look on Julian’s face, and my children huddled behind me.

The "peaceful, enviable" life was dead. The truth was out, and for the first time in years, the air didn't smell like lavender. It smelled like justice.
