Chapter 8 - Night of Retribution

Red and blue emergency lights flashed wildly against the bedroom windows, slicing through the darkness.

“POLICE! THIS IS THE FBI! LOWER YOUR WEAPONS AND STEP OUTSIDE WITH YOUR HANDS UP!” a loud speaker boomed from the street.

Julian’s eyes widened in sudden, genuine shock. For the first time in eight years, I saw panic flicker across his calculated face.

"You quiet little bitch," he snarled, raising the gun.

Before he could pull the trigger, I didn't hesitate—I lunged sideways, grabbing the heavy metal table lamp from the nightstand and throwing it with all my strength directly at his head.

The lamp struck his shoulder, knocking his aim off balance. A muted pop echoed as a bullet shattered the windowpane behind me.

I scrambled across the slick hardwood floor toward the hallway. Julian cursed loudly, lunging after me, grabbing the ankle of my shoe.

I kicked back violently with my free foot, catching him square in the chin. He grunted, his grip slipping.

I scrambled to my feet and sprinted down the hallway toward the front entrance. Behind me, I heard the heavy thud of his boots giving chase.

BOOM!

The front door exploded inward as a tactical breaching charge detonated, blowing the lock off the frame. Heavy wooden splinters flew through the air as armored SWAT officers flooded into the foyer, weapons raised, tactical flashlights cutting through the dust and smoke.

"DROP THE WEAPON! ON THE GROUND NOW!" Detective Marcus Vance roared, stepping through the doorway behind the tactical shield.

Julian burst out of the hallway into the foyer, his gun raised.

"DON'T MOVE!" the officers screamed.

Realizing he was completely cornered, surrounded by ten armed officers with red laser sights focused on his chest, Julian froze. The suppressed pistol trembled in his hand.

"Drop it, Ross!" Marcus ordered, stepping forward. "It's over! Eight years of running ends right now!"

Julian looked at the officers, then at the shattered front door, and finally at me standing safely behind Marcus’s shield. The arrogant, untouchable illusion had been completely obliterated.

Slowly, bitterly, Julian opened his hand. The gun dropped to the floor with a metallic clatter.

Two SWAT officers lunged forward, slamming him onto the hardwood floor, pulling his arms behind his back, and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists with brutal efficiency.

As they dragged him to his feet, Julian looked at me. His face was bruised, his eyes filled with venomous hatred.

"You ruined everything, Rachel," he hissed through gritted teeth.

May you like

I walked up to him, standing tall, looking him dead in the eye without a single drop of fear left in my soul.

"No, Julian," I said, my voice cold, sharp, and victorious. "You ruined yourself the day you touched my family."
