Chapter 6 - A New Beginning

Months later, the court hearing was finally over. Their mother, Laura, had been found in a different state, living a life she had clearly moved on from. She wouldn't be seeing them again. Her rights were terminated, and the court, swayed by the remarkable bond between the siblings, made a decision that surprised everyone.
They were placed in the care of a foster family that lived on a farm in upstate New York—a couple who had struggled with infertility for years and had the space, the resources, and, most importantly, the heart to take all four of them.
The transition wasn't easy. There were nightmares, there were moments of panic when the pantry door was closed, there were times when they had to hold each other just to remember they were safe. But the farm was different. It had fields to run in, animals to care for, and a table that was always filled with food.
On their first Christmas at the farm, Ethan sat on the porch, watching his siblings play in the snow. They looked different—healthy, robust, and happy. Sophie was laughing, chasing a golden retriever across the yard. Ben was helping their foster father clear the driveway, and Lily was drinking hot chocolate on the swing, her face glowing with peace.
Ethan felt a hand on his shoulder. It was his foster mother, Sarah.
"They’re doing so well, Ethan," she said, her voice filled with pride. "Because of you."
Ethan looked down at his hands—the same hands that had cleaned the floors, washed the laundry, and held the broken toys of his siblings in the dark of Willow Street.

"They’re doing well because they’re together," Ethan said.
He took a deep breath of the crisp, clean air. For the first time in his life, he didn't have to worry about tomorrow. The door of Apartment 3B had closed forever, but the door to their future was wide open. He wasn't a guardian of the shadows anymore. He was just a brother, and for the first time, that was enough.
