Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

Across the city, in the opulent foyer of the Elmwood Terrace mansion, panic had officially set in.

Graham Harrington stood in his custom-tailored Brioni suit—the very suit he wore to project the image of an untouchable corporate executive—staring blankly at his smartphone screen. The digital display flashed a rigid red warning: ACCOUNT FROZEN. CONTACT PRIMARY ADMINISTRATOR.

“What do you mean, declined?!” Graham roared into the receiver, his face turning a mottled shade of crimson. “I am the senior vice president of regional operations! My card has an unlimited tier! Check it again!”

A tinny, automated voice droned through the speaker: “We’re sorry, Mr. Harrington. This account has been restricted under orders from the primary institutional holder. Please contact your corporate legal department.”

The line went dead.

Graham lowered the phone slowly, his hands trembling. He looked up to see his mother, Vivian, descending the grand staircase in a silk housecoat, her face twisted in an expression of absolute aristocratic fury.

“Graham! What on earth is happening?” Vivian demanded, her voice echoing off the marble floors. “I tried to charge my morning delivery from the floral boutique, and the card was rejected! The florist had the absolute audacity to suggest my account was delinquent! Do they know who I am?!”

“I don’t know, Mother,” Graham snapped, running a hand through his slicked-back hair, the panic finally breaking through his arrogant facade. “My accounts are locked too. I tried to log into the corporate portal, and my credentials were invalid!”

Before Vivian could reply, the heavy front doorbell rang. Ding-dong. Ding-dong.

“Thank God,” Vivian huffed, waving her hand dismissively toward the door. “That must be the private courier with the bank reset codes. Open the door, Graham, and let’s get this humiliating nonsense sorted out.”

Graham strode across the foyer and yanked the heavy oak door open, expecting a bank representative or a corporate IT tech.

Instead, standing on the porch were two towering, stone-faced private bailiffs flanked by a local sheriff’s deputy. The lead bailiff held a thick manila folder under his arm, his expression completely devoid of warmth.

“Mr. Graham Harrington?” the bailiff asked, his voice flat and authoritative.

“Yes? Who are you?” Graham bristled, puffing out his chest. “Do you know whose property you’re standing on? I demand to speak to your supervisor—!”

“Step aside, sir,” the bailiff interrupted, brushing past Graham without a second hesitation. The sheriff’s deputy stepped into the foyer behind him.

“What is the meaning of this?!” Vivian shrieked, marching down the last few steps. “Get out of my house right now, or I’ll have my son have you all fired before lunch!”

The bailiff opened the manila folder and pulled out a crisp, legal document, holding it up so they could read the header.

“Notice of Immediate Lease Termination and Asset Repossession,” the bailiff read aloud, his voice echoing through the grand hall. “Issued by V-Holdings LLC, sole property owner of 442 Elmwood Terrace. You have twenty-four hours to vacate the premises. All personal effects, vehicles registered under corporate leases, and luxury assets housed on this property are hereby seized pending forensic audit and debt recovery proceedings.”

The foyer fell into a dead, suffocating silence.

Vivian’s jaw dropped so fast her teeth clicked together. “V-Holdings? That’s impossible! This house has belonged to the Harrington family for three generations! My husband bought this estate—”

“Your late husband defaulted on the primary mortgage four years ago,” the bailiff stated coldly, cutting her off. “The property was acquired in a silent equity purchase by Vale International Holdings. You haven't owned this house in years, madam. You’ve been living here as corporate tenants courtesy of a discretionary housing subsidy.”

Graham staggered backward, colliding with a small antique side table that rattled under his weight. “No... no, that’s insane. I work for Harrington Luxe! I’m a senior executive! Who runs Vale International? Who is the parent corporation?!”

The bailiff offered a faint, chilling smirk.

“You’ll find out this afternoon, Mr. Harrington,” the bailiff said, tossing a set of official notices onto the marble console table. “You’ve been summoned to appear at Vale Tower for an emergency executive board meeting at 2:00 PM. Don't be late. The CEO doesn't like waiting.”

May you like

With that, the bailiffs turned on their heels and walked out, leaving the heavy oak door standing wide open, letting a bitter gust of winter wind sweep straight into the heart of the Harrington estate.

Graham stood frozen, staring at the open door. For the first time in his life, the floor beneath his feet felt like glass, and it was about to shatter into a million jagged pieces.
