Chapter 7 - The Final Trial

A year later.

The summer afternoon was alive with the sound of laughter, rustling oak leaves, and the gentle lapping of waves against the shore.

The gardens of the Rhode Island estate had been transformed into a celebration of life. White linen tables were scattered across the lawn, topped with fresh wildflowers, wooden toys, and crisp summer refreshments.

It was Isla and Wesley’s first birthday.

Friends, family from Vermont, local artisans, and a select few loyal colleagues from the restructured firm had gathered to celebrate.

Isla, wearing a soft yellow sundress, was toddling across the green grass on sturdy little legs, pursuing a butterfly with furious determination, her bright hazel eyes laughing as her mother walked right behind her, arms outstretched to catch her if she stumbled.

Wesley, a chubby, energetic boy with a thick mop of dark hair, sat on a blanket near the patio, enthusiastically clapping his hands as Sebastian built a tower of brightly colored wooden blocks for him to knock down.

"Look out, Daddy!" Wesley babbled, swinging his arm and sending the block tower crashing to the grass, letting out a ringing, joyful squeal.

Sebastian collapsed onto his back on the grass, dramatic in his defeat. "You destroyed my tower, Wesley! A total hostile takeover!"

Wesley crawled onto Sebastian’s chest, giggling madly, pounding his soft little hands against Sebastian’s linen shirt. Sebastian pulled his son into a warm hug, lifting him into the air until the boy squealed with delight.

Odette walked over, holding Isla on her hip, looking down at the two boys with a look of pure, unadulterated happiness.

"Are you teaching our son corporate raids already?" she asked, raising an eyebrow playfully.

"He has a natural talent for aggressive restructuring," Sebastian smiled, sitting up and placing Wesley on the blanket.

Vance Reeves stepped onto the patio, wearing a relaxed suit without a tie, holding an official-looking envelope. He gave Odette a respectful nod before offering the document to Sebastian.

"Final court decrees came through this morning," Vance reported quietly. "Desmond Cole’s appeal was flatly rejected by the state supreme court. He will serve his full twelve-year sentence without parole eligibility."

Sebastian took the envelope, glanced at the judicial seal, and handed it back to Vance without opening it.

"And Marcus?" Odette asked gently.

"Your father’s medical team reports he is comfortable," Vance replied softly. "He spent yesterday afternoon watching a video feed of the new children's hospital wing you funded in Boston. He didn't speak, but... he watched the entire ribbon-cutting ceremony."

Sebastian looked down at his hands, feeling a quiet, peaceful closure wash over him. The bitterness had long since faded, replaced by an overwhelming gratitude for the life he had built from the ashes of his past.

"Thank you, Vance," Sebastian said. "Go get something to eat. The lobster roll station is open."

Vance smiled, nodded, and walked toward the party tables.

Sebastian stood up, wiping the grass from his trousers, and turned to look at his wife and children. Isla reached out her tiny arms toward him, and Sebastian immediately lifted her into his other arm, holding both of his children against his chest.

Odette stepped close, wrapping her arms around Sebastian’s waist, leaning her head against his shoulder as they watched their friends and loved ones celebrating on the lawn.

"Look at what we built," Odette whispered.

"No," Sebastian corrected her softly, kissing her lips with deep, eternal devotion. "Look at what you saved."
