Chapter 7 - A New Dawn

Six months later, the California coast was bathed in the warm, golden glow of late afternoon.
There was no grand ballroom, no artificial perfection, and no crowd of judging eyes.
Instead, the lawn of the Malibu house was scattered with colorful beach towels, plastic sand buckets, and a gentle ocean breeze that carried the scent of salt and grilling burgers.
Hannah was flipping burgers on the patio grill, laughing as a golden retriever—a rescue dog they had adopted the month before—chased a tennis ball across the grass.
Oliver was running along the shoreline, his bare feet kicking up spray from the shallow tide pools, shouting back to Eleanor as she sat on a wooden bench watching him.
She wore a simple linen dress, her hair blowing freely in the wind. No armor. No corporate disguise. No hidden secrets.
For the first time in seven years, Eleanor Whitmore felt completely, utterly light.
As Oliver ran up the wooden steps of the porch, panting and laughing with sand clinging to his knees, he climbed onto the bench beside her and leaned his head against her shoulder.
“Mom?” he asked, looking up at her with those bright, familiar eyes.
“Yes, sweetie?”
“Are we ever going back to the city?”
May you like
Eleanor looked out over the endless expanse of the ocean, where the sun was beginning to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in brilliant strokes of gold, pink, and violet.
“No, Oliver,” she smiled, wrapping her arm securely around her son and pulling him close against her heart. “We’re never going back. Our story starts right here.”
