CHAPTER 7 — THE MAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE GONE

At sunrise, Nathan left the girls sleeping under the care of two trusted family security officers.

"I'll be back before lunch," he whispered.

Emma smiled in her sleep.

Lily never let go of his jacket until he gently slipped free.

An hour later...

Nathan entered a forgotten warehouse near the old harbor.

No company logo.

No guards.

Just an aging man sweeping the concrete floor.

Without looking up, the man spoke.

"I wondered how long it would take."

Nathan froze.

"Marcus."

The man smiled sadly.

"You finally know."

Nathan walked closer.

"I buried your reputation."

Marcus nodded.

"I know."

"You stole from my family."

"No."

"You disappeared."

"I was removed."

Nathan's jaw tightened.

"Explain."

Marcus leaned the broom against the wall.

"They needed someone to blame."

Nathan remained silent.

Marcus continued.

"When your father became sick, several executives realized something."

"They couldn't control him."

"So they built something they could control instead."

"The Governance Board."

Nathan listened carefully.

"I refused to sign."

Marcus reached into an old cabinet.

He removed a weathered envelope.

Still sealed.

"I've been waiting fifteen years to give this back."

Nathan slowly opened it.

Inside...

was his father's original succession letter.

Untouched.

Never delivered.

Nathan's hands trembled.

His father had written:

Nathan,

If you are reading this, it means they moved faster than I expected.

Trust no committee created after my illness.

There is no Governance Board.

If anyone claims otherwise...

They built it without me.

Nathan lowered the paper.

His voice was barely audible.

"He knew."

Marcus nodded.

"He knew they were preparing for the day he couldn't stop them."

Nathan looked toward the window.

"So my wife..."

Marcus interrupted gently.

"She wasn't the architect."

Nathan looked back.

"She was recruited."

A long silence followed.

Marcus spoke again.

"She believed she was protecting the family's future."

Nathan's expression remained hard.

"She abused two little girls."

Marcus didn't argue.

"No."

"She crossed a line nobody can defend."

Nathan folded the letter carefully.

"Who leads the board now?"

Marcus answered immediately.

"You've already met him."

Nathan frowned.

"Who?"

Marcus looked him directly in the eyes.

"The man who toasted your marriage at the reception."

Nathan's blood ran cold.

Richard Ashcroft.

His father's oldest attorney.

The man Nathan had trusted since childhood.

The man who had held Emma the day she was born.

Marcus whispered quietly.

"He never wanted your company."

"He wanted your authority."

Nathan understood at last.

The house.

The marriage.

The children.

None of them had been the objective.

May you like

They were leverage.

And someone had been pulling those strings for years.
