Chapter 6 - The Antidote

The heavy oak door of Leo’s room wouldn't yield to the electronic master key because Nora had thrown the deadbolt manually from the inside.
Victor threw his entire weight against the panels, a shoulder-check that splintered the mahogany frame around the lock with a resounding crack.
The door flew open.
Nora spun around, the empty syringe still in her hand, her eyes wide with shock. “Mr. Langley—!”
Victor crossed the room in a blind fury, grabbing Nora by the arms and pinning her against the wall, the empty syringe clattering to the floor.
“What did you give him?!” Victor roared, his face inches from hers, veins bulging at his temples. “What the hell did you just put in my son?!”
“Look at him!” Nora gasped, struggling against his grip without trying to strike back. “Just look at the bed, you paranoid idiot!”
Victor froze.
He turned his head toward the custom medical bed.
Leo was no longer staring blankly at the ceiling. His dark eyes—Claire’s eyes—were wide, focused, and swimming with a terrifying, overwhelming rush of consciousness. The blank, vacant fog that had consumed him for fourteen months was gone, replaced by the fierce, burning light of a seven-year-old boy waking up from a nightmare.
Leo’s mouth opened. His lips trembled, trying to form shapes that his vocal cords hadn't used in over a year.
“Dad...”
The word was cracked, dry, and barely above a whisper, but it cut through the silence of the room like a lightning bolt.
Victor released Nora instantly, staggering backward as if he had been struck. He dropped to his knees beside the bed, staring at his son’s face with unseeing, tear-filled eyes.
“Leo?” Victor choked out, his voice cracking completely. “Leo, can you... can you see me?”
Leo swallowed hard, his small hand twitching against the blue blanket before his fingers finally wrapped around Victor’s thumb with a desperate, familiar grip.
“She... she did it,” Leo whispered, his voice shaking with effort. “The lady in the white car... she did it to Mom, too.”
Victor went cold all over. “Who, Leo? Who was in the car?”

Leo’s eyes darted toward the bedroom door, then back to his father, filled with absolute terror.
“Natalie.”
