Chapter 5 - The Banquet of Fools

Monday morning arrived with a brilliant, mocking burst of autumn sunshine over Manhattan.

At 10:00 AM, inside the grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel, Cole Enterprises was hosting a lavish, invitation-only press gala to celebrate the official closing of its multi-million-dollar merger with Sterling Development.

Hundreds of high-society elites, real estate moguls, city council members, and prominent journalists filled the sunlit room, sipping champagne and listening to jazz music drift from a live string quartet.

At the center of the dais stood Michael Sterling.

He looked immaculate in a custom-tailored Brioni tuxedo, his hair slicked back, a champagne flute raised in one hand as he laughed smoothly at a joke made by a prominent city developer. Beside him stood Vanessa Cole, draped in emerald silk and dripping in diamond jewelry, basking in the public triumph of having successfully crushed her corporate rivals and secured her family’s legacy.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Michael announced into the microphone, his voice dripping with false humility and practiced charm, “today marks a monumental milestone for Sterling Development. Hard work, unyielding vision, and absolute dedication to excellence are the true cornerstones of success. We built this empire through discipline, sacrifice, and an unwavering commitment to the future.”

A polite wave of applause rippled through the ballroom.

Michael smiled, soaking in the adulation. He had won. He had traded his wife and daughter for a corporate empire, and in his mind, there was no consequence left to pay.

He didn't notice the heavy oak doors at the back of the grand ballroom quietly swinging open.

He didn't see the two federal marshals stepping calmly into the room, followed by Jonathan Thorne in a charcoal suit, and me.

I walked down the center aisle with my head held high, my heels clicking a sharp, measured rhythm against the polished marble floor. I wore a tailored crimson dress that caught the morning light like a blade, my posture unyielding, my eyes locked directly on the man standing on the stage.

Conversations around the room began to die down. Heads turned. Whispers rippled through the front rows as prominent socialites recognized the woman Michael had publicly discarded less than a week ago.

Michael stopped mid-sentence. His champagne flute froze halfway to his mouth.

The color drained entirely from his face, leaving him looking like a corpse in a tuxedo.

“Elena?” Michael muttered into the microphone, his voice cracking loudly over the PA system. “What... what are you doing here? Security! Remove this woman immediately!”

Nobody moved.

Security guards near the doors took one look at the federal marshals flanking Jonathan Thorne and wisely stayed put.

I walked right up to the base of the stage, stopping ten feet below him, looking up with a cold, absolute calm that terrified him more than any scream ever could.

“Looking for your missing assets, Michael,” I said loudly enough for the entire ballroom to hear without a microphone.

Vanessa Cole stepped forward, her face twisting into a mask of venomous fury. “Are you out of your mind, you pathetic little beggar? You have no business here! This is a private corporate gala—”

“It was a private corporate gala,” a deep, commanding voice echoed through the hall.

Jonathan Thorne stepped forward, holding a thick sheaf of legal documents aloft.

“Until the United States District Court and the New York State Attorney General’s Office issued an immediate freeze on all corporate assets, subsidiary accounts, and merger funds associated with Cole Enterprises and Sterling Development due to securities fraud, corporate embezzlement, and the criminal falsification of genetic documentation.”

The ballroom erupted into instant, deafening chaos.

Journalists scrambled for their cameras. Flashbulbs exploded like lightning storms across the room. City council members turned pale, sliding quietly toward the exit doors to avoid association.

Michael dropped his champagne flute. It shattered against the marble stage, splashing sparkling wine across his expensive leather shoes.

“That’s... that’s a lie!” Michael shrieked, stumbling forward, grabbing the edge of the podium with white knuckles. “She’s lying! She’s a bitter ex-wife trying to ruin my company!”

“I’m not your ex-wife anymore, Michael,” I said, my voice cutting through the pandemonium like a razor.

I reached into my designer handbag, pulled out the official state forensic DNA report along with the federal arrest warrant for corporate fraud, and tossed them upward onto the stage.

They fluttered down like falling autumn leaves, landing right at his feet.

“According to the court,” I continued, my eyes locking onto his terrified soul, “you don't own a single share of this company, your bank accounts are locked by federal marshals, and your daughter’s legal custody has been granted entirely to me—along with an immediate lien on every asset you ever dreamed of stealing.”

Vanessa Cole whirled around to face Michael, her face contorted with absolute hatred. “You idiot! You said she was broken! You said she had nothing!”

Michael didn't answer. He stared down at the documents on the stage floor, his knees buckling beneath him as two federal marshals stepped up the steps, placed cold steel handcuffs around his wrists, and clicked them shut with a definitive, chilling snap.
