PART 1: THAT'S MY SISTER

The emergency entrance of Saint Mary's Hospital was unusually crowded that morning.
Nurses rushed through the halls.
Doctors moved from room to room.
Families filled the waiting area.
Then suddenly—
A scream echoed through the lobby.
"Don't take her!"
Everyone turned.
Near the front doors stood a little boy, no older than eight.
Barefoot.
Dirty.
Shivering.
Tears streamed down his face.
Both hands were gripping a baby stroller with all his strength.
Inside the stroller slept a newborn baby girl wrapped in a pink blanket.
Across from him stood a wealthy couple.
The woman wore designer clothes and diamond jewelry.
The man beside her looked equally affluent.
The woman tried pulling the stroller away.
The boy refused to let go.
"Please!" he cried.
"Don't take my sister!"
The crowd began whispering.
A hospital security guard rushed forward.
"Son, let go of the stroller."
The boy shook his head violently.
"No!"
The wealthy man stepped forward.
"He's confused," he said.
"We're the baby's legal guardians."
The little boy's face twisted with panic.
"No, you're not!"
The woman looked nervous now.
Very nervous.
The baby stirred softly inside the stroller.
The boy immediately reached down and gently touched her tiny hand.
His voice cracked.
"Mom promised me I'd protect her."
Those words silenced several people nearby.
A nurse named Rachel stepped closer.
She had worked in pediatrics for nearly fifteen years.
Something about this situation felt wrong.
Very wrong.
The wealthy man grew impatient.
"Security, remove him."
The guards moved forward.
Then the little boy did something unexpected.
He pulled up his sleeve.
A faded hospital bracelet still hung from his wrist.
"Look!"
Rachel glanced down.
At first she saw nothing unusual.
Then her eyes widened.
The bracelet carried the same last name as the newborn.
Same ward.
Same admission date.
Same mother.
Rachel immediately looked at the baby's identification bracelet.
Then back at the boy's.
The color drained from her face.
Because the boy wasn't lying.
He and the baby were connected.
And suddenly, nobody in the lobby was trying to pull him away anymore.
The wealthy couple exchanged a nervous glance.
Rachel felt a chill crawl down her spine.
May you like
Because she was beginning to suspect something terrible had happened.
And the little boy might be the only person telling the truth.
