Chapter 8 - The Heir of Concincaid

Conrad stepped through the broken brick opening, flanked by four armed guards with assault rifles trained directly on Jasper and Leo.
Conrad was wearing a heavy leather trench coat, his revolver held loosely in his right hand. His eyes swept over the dead bodies, then landed on Jasper with a cold, triumphant smile.
"I must admit, I didn't think you had the stomach for this, Jasper," Conrad said softly. "I thought you were just a soft, pampered businessman playing mafia."
"You murdered my family, Conrad," Jasper said, his fingers tightening around his pistol, stepping in front of Jonah. "You executed my father and my brother in cold blood."
"Your father was a fool!" Conrad spat, his voice suddenly sharp with bitter rage. "He spent thirty years treating me like a servant! I built his empire! I managed his money! I did the dirty work that kept this family rich! And when he was dying, do you know what he told me?"
Conrad took a step closer, pointing the revolver at Jasper's head.
"He told me he was leaving everything to you. The exile! The prodigal son who ran away to California! He was going to strip me of everything I earned!"
"So you killed him," Jasper said, his voice terrifyingly calm.
"Garrett tried to stop me," Conrad laughed wickedly. "He caught me down here moving the offshore files. He fought like a dog, but my men put him down. And the boy..." Conrad looked down at Jonah with a sneer. "...the boy watched the whole thing through the grate in the floor."
Jonah shuddered, clinging to his uncle's leg.
"That's why he stopped speaking," Jasper realized, his heart breaking for the boy. "He saw you murder his father."
"And now, history repeats itself," Conrad said, raising his revolver until the barrel was leveled directly between Jasper's eyes. "A tragic gunfight in the basement. The rogue heir returns, attacks the estate, and dies in a tragic shootout. I'll take full custody of little Jonah, sign over the remaining deeds, and in six months, he'll suffer a tragic illness."
"You're forgetting one thing, Conrad," Jasper said softly.
Conrad frowned. "And what's that?"
"You forgot about the dog."
Jasper dropped his hand and barked a single word: "BRUTUS! ATTACK!"
The mastiff didn't bark. He didn't hesitate.
One hundred and fifty pounds of fury erupted from the shadows beside Harrison's body. Brutus lunged through the air, his jaws locking around Conrad's right forearm with bone-crushing force.
Conrad shrieked in agony as the revolver flew from his hand, discharging a wildly aimed shot into the concrete ceiling.
"FIRE!" the lead guard screamed.
Before the guards could pull their triggers, Leo leaped forward, firing three rapid shots from his tactical pistol, dropping two guards instantly.
Jasper lunged at the remaining guard, tackling him into the stone wall, disarming him with a brutal strike to the throat, and driving him into the concrete floor.
Conrad was screaming on the floor, dragging his bloody arm, trying to crawl toward his fallen revolver. Brutus stood over him, his jaws dripping blood, his heavy paws pinned against Conrad's chest.
Jasper picked up the revolver from the stone floor, stepped over to Conrad, and pressed the cold steel barrel directly against the center of Conrad's forehead.
"Please! Jasper, no!" Conrad begged, his face pale with terror, weeping, his former arrogance completely shattered. "We're family! I raised you! Don't do this!"
Jasper stared down at the man who had ruined his life, his finger resting on the heavy trigger.
The room went dead silent, save for the heavy breathing of the dog and the patter of rain from above.
Jasper looked at his father's body, then at Garrett, and finally down at eight-year-old Jonah, who was watching him with wide, tear-filled eyes.
Jasper took a slow, deep breath.
"In my family, Conrad," Jasper said softly, "we don't kill dogs. We put them in cages."
Jasper pulled his pistol back, reversing his grip, and slammed the heavy steel butt of the gun hard across Conrad's temple, knocking him unconscious instantly.
Two hours later, the storm had finally passed.
Dawn broke over the coastal cliffs, casting long, golden rays of sunshine across the estate.
The courtyard was filled with state police cruisers, emergency ambulances, and federal vehicles. Conrad Vance and his surviving men were being led away in heavy iron handcuffs, facing life sentences for capital murder, kidnapping, and financial fraud.
Jasper stood on the grand front steps of the mansion, wrapped in a dark coat, holding a warm cup of coffee.
Beside him stood Jonah. The boy was wearing a warm jacket, his hands tucked into his pockets. He wasn't holding the teddy bear anymore. He was holding Jasper's hand.
Brutus lay comfortably on the top stone step, his raw paws bandaged, resting his broad head on Jasper's boot, finally at peace.
"What happens now, Uncle Jasper?" Jonah asked softly. His voice was no longer a raspy whisper. It was clear, bright, and strong.
Jasper looked down at his nephew, then out at the rising sun over the vast Atlantic Ocean.
He knelt down, placing a hand on Jonah's shoulder.

"Now, Jonah," Jasper said with a genuine, warm smile, "we rebuild this home. Together."
Jonah smiled back, taking a deep breath of the clean morning air, as the sun rose over Concincaid Estate, casting away the shadows once and for all.
