Chapter 7 - The Trap Springs Outside

The black Mercedes Maybach carrying Serena Yoon tore through the iron gates of the Kang estate at 11:00 PM, hurtling down the dark, rain-slicked highway toward O’Hare International Airport.

In the back seat, Serena sat rigid, her phone pressed against her ear, tears of rage streaming down her powdered cheeks.

“Director Park!” she shrieked into the phone as the car hydroplaned slightly around a dark curve. “He threw me out! He discarded me like trash for a maid and a bastard child! You need to activate the contingency plan now! Use the triad contacts in the North Side! I want that estate burned to the ground!”

“Calm down, Serena,” Director Park’s voice crackled through the speaker, surprisingly calm, almost chillingly detached. “The contingency plan was never about you marrying him. Marrying him was simply the easy way to acquire the North Side shipping ports.”

Serena blinked, her tears pausing. “What... what do you mean?”

“I mean,” Park said softly, “that men like Daniel Kang cannot be reasoned with once sentimentality takes root. Which is why, three hours ago, before you even called me, I authorized a strike team to bypass the estate’s secondary power grid.”

Serena’s breath caught. “A strike team? But Daniel has armed guards—”

“Daniel Kang is currently sitting in his dining hall thinking he has won,” Park interrupted. “By midnight, the east wing will be cleared. The child will be eliminated, the mother will vanish, and the Kang empire will be left without an heir or a defense. And when the police investigate, they will find evidence linking the attack to your rival syndicate in Chinatown.”

The phone line went dead with a soft click.

Serena slowly lowered the phone, her blood running ice-cold. She had thought she was the mastermind manipulating the pieces on the board.

She realized too late that she was just another pawn being sacrificed to destroy the King of the North Side.
