Chapter 7 - Safe Harbor

Spring bled into a warm, golden summer across New York.

The scars of the past winter had faded into history. House Rossi was a distant memory, its remaining assets absorbed peacefully into the Moretti syndicate, transforming Damiano into an unchallenged titan of industry and underworld governance alike.

The estate gardens were in full bloom, overflowing with white roses, climbing ivy, and bright lavender that filled the courtyard air with a sweet, calming fragrance.

Sophia sat on a wrought-iron bench beneath the shade of a weeping willow tree, sketching architectural floor plans on a large sketchpad. Before life took a sharp, desperate turn three years ago, she had studied structural design at Columbia University before financial ruin forced her into domestic service.

A shadow fell across her paper.

She looked up to see Damiano standing over her, holding a tray with two glasses of iced lemonade and a plate of shortbread cookies. He wore a casual linen shirt and dark trousers, looking less like a mafia lord and more like a man who finally knew how to breathe.

“You’ve been staring at that same set of lines for twenty minutes,” Damiano noted, setting the tray down on the garden table and taking a seat beside her.

“I’m redesigning the community youth center downtown,” Sophia explained, smiling as she tapped her pencil against the paper. “The city council approved the zoning grant last week. It’s going to have an art studio, a reading room, and a safe after-school space for kids whose parents work late.”

Damiano poured a glass of lemonade, handing it to her before pouring his own. “You don't need to work, Sophia. You know that. The trust fund I set up for you and Emma can sustain generations.”

“I don't want to just exist, Damiano,” Sophia said gently, turning to face him. “I want to build things. Real things. Things that last.”

Damiano was silent for a long moment. He took a slow sip of his lemonade, his dark eyes never leaving her face.

“You already built something that lasts, Sophia,” he said softly, his voice dropping into that rich, resonant timber that always made her breath hitch. “You built a family inside a house that used to be built entirely on stone and shadows.”

Sophia felt a warm flush rise to her cheeks. She set her sketchpad aside, reaching out to place her hand over his. His fingers instantly intertwined with hers, a perfect, unbreakable fit.

“Emma asked me a question yesterday,” Sophia murmured, looking out toward the lawn where their golden retriever puppy was currently chasing Emma through the rose bushes.

“Oh? What did she ask?”

“She asked me if you were going to stay with us forever.”

Damiano’s expression softened completely. The terrifying mafia boss vanished entirely, leaving only a man deeply, fiercely in love.

He turned his hand over, lacing his fingers tightly through hers, lifting her knuckles to his lips and pressing a warm, lingering kiss against her skin.

“Tell her,” Damiano whispered against her hand, “that kings don't leave their kingdoms. And my kingdom is wherever you and she are.”
