Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Siege

The glass tower of Vance Dynamics headquarters in downtown Boston shimmered against the dark night sky. On the forty-second floor, the executive boardroom was in a state of absolute hysteria.

It was 8:00 PM. Sixteen board members, major shareholders, and chief financial analysts sat around the thirty-foot mahogany table, shouting over one another.

Silas Vance stood at the head of the table, his tie loosened, his hair disheveled, sweat glistening on his forehead. Odalys sat in the corner, nervously typing on her encrypted tablet, her usual polished confidence completely shattered.

"What do you mean we don't hold the patents?!" Board Chairman Julian Thorne roared, slamming his fist onto the table. "Our entire valuation—our twelve-billion-dollar market cap—is based on the Generation-4 turbine design! We just went public six months ago!"

"It was a licensing oversight!" Silas yelled back, his voice cracking with desperation. "The original patents were held in an obscure offshore trust created by my father-in-law thirty years ago! It was supposed to be a formality!"

"A formality?!" Julian stood up, his face red with rage. "I just received a call from the Securities and Exchange Commission! The holding trust—Osei Global Infrastructure—just issued an immediate cease-and-desist! They’ve frozen our manufacturing plants in Ohio and Texas! Our stock is down forty percent in after-hours trading!"

"Who the hell is Osei Global?" another board member demanded. "I thought Wren Vance’s father was a retired auto mechanic!"

Odalys looked up from her screen, her voice shaking. "Osei Global... isn't just a holding trust. It’s the parent firm that owns forty percent of Kade Capital’s debt obligations. Marcus Osei... he isn't a mechanic. He’s the original chief engineer of the US Army Corps of Infrastructure. He retired thirty years ago after holding more green-energy manufacturing patents than any living individual in North America."

The boardroom fell into a dead, suffocating silence.

Silas felt as though the floor beneath his feet was caving in. He had spent six years treating Marcus Osei like an uneducated old man. He had invited Marcus to family dinners only to ignore him, making fun of his old canvas jackets and callused hands behind his back. He had assumed Marcus was living off small royalty checks that Silas had graciously provided.

In reality, Marcus Osei had been sitting quietly in the background, allowing his daughter to shine, allowing Silas to build an empire on top of technology Marcus had personally invented and placed into trust for Wren.

"Silas," Julian Thorne said, his voice dropping into a deadly, ice-cold register. "You told us Wren was a liability. You told us she was unstable and that you had full control over her intellectual property. You brought this woman—Odalys—into our financial meetings to restructure our debt through Kade Capital."

"I... I can fix this!" Silas stammered, wiping sweat from his eye. "Wren is in the hospital. She’s pregnant. She’s emotionally vulnerable right now. I’ll go back there. I’ll make her sign the rights transfer. She loves me. She’ll do whatever I ask if I offer her full custody!"

Before Silas could finish his sentence, the heavy mahogany doors of the boardroom swung open.

Three federal marshals stepped into the room, followed by Arthur Pendelton and a team of forensic accountants carrying sealed silver cases.

"Silas Vance?" the lead federal marshal called out.

Silas froze, his jaw dropping. "What is this?"

"We have a federal injunction issued by the United States District Court," Arthur Pendelton announced smoothly, stepping to the center of the room. "On behalf of Osei Global Infrastructure and Mrs. Wren Osei-Vance, we are seizing all digital servers, corporate ledgers, and financial records of Vance Dynamics effective immediately."

"You can't do that!" Odalys shrieked, jumping out of her chair. "Kade Capital has diplomatic immunity on offshore accounts!"

Arthur Pendelton looked at Odalys with a sharp, predatory smile. "Miss Odalys Vane, Kade Capital’s offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands were liquidated two hours ago by majority vote of the master trust. Furthermore, federal prosecutors have issued a warrant for your arrest regarding corporate espionage, assault, and evidence tampering at St. Jude’s Hospital."

Two marshals stepped toward Odalys, pulling silver handcuffs from their belts.

"Silas! Do something!" Odalys screamed, backing away as her wrists were grabbed and pinned behind her back. "Silas! Save me!"

Silas stood frozen, unable to speak, unable to move, as Odalys was dragged kicking and screaming out of the executive boardroom in front of the entire board of directors.

Arthur Pendelton walked to the head of the table, pulling a thick leather folder from his briefcase, setting it directly in front of Silas.

"What is this?" Silas whispered, his voice trembling uncontrollably.

"That is a complete petition for total corporate receivership," Pendelton said softly. "Marcus Osei has called in the thirty-million-dollar promissory note you signed during Vance Dynamics’ initial startup phase. You have twelve hours to produce thirty million dollars in cash, Silas. If you fail, Osei Global takes one hundred percent ownership of this company."

Silas dropped into his chair, his eyes wide, staring at the paper. Thirty million dollars. He didn't have thirty million in cash—every cent he possessed was tied up in Vance Dynamics stock, which was currently collapsing into rock bottom.

"Tell Marcus... tell Marcus I want to talk to him!" Silas sobbed, pressing his hands against his face. "He’s my father-in-law! We're family!"

May you like

Pendelton bent down, his cold eyes locking onto Silas.

"Marcus Osei has only one thing to say to you, Silas," Pendelton whispered. "You touched his daughter. Now, he’s going to erase you."
