Chapter 7 - The Paper Trail of Greed

At 11:00 AM, a medical transport helicopter touched down on the roof helipad of Bell County Regional Hospital under a breaking sky.

Inside the ICU, the surgical team moved with rapid, practiced precision.

Sarah Pike was wheeled out of Room 411 on a high-speed gurney, surrounded by three cardiac nurses, two anesthesiologists, and Doctor Warren, who was holding a steel cooler marked with bright red biohazard symbols: HUMAN ORGAN FOR TRANSPLANT — IMMEDIATE TRANSPORT.

In the waiting room down the hall, Dela Pike sat on her mother’s old denim jacket, holding her small canvas backpack.

Warren walked into the waiting room, accompanied by Tom Miller.

When Dela saw Warren, she stood up, her little black shoes making a soft tapping sound against the floor.

“Mr. Warren?” she asked, her voice quiet. “Is the new heart here?”

Warren dropped down on one knee in front of her. For the first time in thirty years, his eyes were wet with tears.

“It’s here, Dela,” Warren said gently, reaching out to take her small hand in his. “The doctors are taking it to your mommy right now.”

Dela looked at him for a long moment. Then, she unzipped her small canvas backpack, reached inside, and pulled out her sandwich bag containing her four dollars and pennies.

She pushed the plastic bag into Warren’s big, calloused hand.

“Thank you for helping me buy it,” she whispered.

Warren looked down at the handful of coins—at the worn copper pennies, the shiny quarters, the crumpled dollar bills—and felt a lump in his throat so large he couldn't speak for several seconds.

He closed his fingers around the plastic bag, holding it like it was the most valuable treasure on earth.

“I’m going to keep this bag, Dela,” Warren said, his voice cracking slightly. “I’m going to keep it in my office so I never forget what a heart actually costs.”

Beside them, Tom Miller placed a heavy hand on Warren’s shoulder, giving it a tight, forgiving squeeze.

From the hallway, the doors to the operating theater swung shut, the red light above the frame illuminating with a steady, glowing brightness: SURGERY IN PROGRESS.
