Chapter 6 - The Viral Backfire

The internet is a wild, unpredictable beast. It feeds on cruelty, but it hungers even more for justice.
On Thursday morning, sixteen-year-old Kevin Vance—Thomas’s nephew and the eldest son of his sister Karen—woke up expecting a normal day at high school.
Three days earlier, during the birthday party at the garden, Kevin had recorded a thirty-second video of six-year-old Jacob struggling to wipe down a grease-stained table while Rebecca sobbed in the background. Kevin had posted the video to TikTok with a mocking caption: “Teaching the black sheep’s spoiled kids what real work looks like! #FamilyFirst #Humility #Service.”
Kevin had expected his high school friends to laugh.
Instead, when he opened his phone at 7:00 AM, his notifications were frozen. The video had hit 8.4 million views overnight.
And the comments were not laughing.
@User8921: "This is literal child abuse and emotional degradation. Look at that sweet little boy trembling!" @MamaBear_45: "Who are these horrible people filming a crying child?! Someone find this family and report them!" @DenverLocal: "Wait, I know that kid! That’s Thomas’s son from City Diner! Thomas is the sweetest guy in Denver—he donates free meals to the homeless every winter! Who the hell put his kids in aprons?!" @JusticeForJacob: "Doxxing time. The teenager who posted this is Kevin Vance. His mom is Karen Vance, owner of 'Karen’s Floral Designs' in Lakewood. Let’s drop her reviews to 1 star!"
Kevin went pale as death. He scrambled out of bed and ran down the stairs into his family’s kitchen.
"Mom! Mom, wake up!" Kevin screamed, thrusting his phone into Karen’s face.
Karen, sitting at her table drinking coffee, took the phone. As she read the comments, her hands began to shake violently.
"Kevin... what did you do?" Karen gasped.
"I just posted the video from Grandma’s party!" Kevin panicked. "I thought it was funny!"
Before Karen could answer, her business phone began ringing off the hook.
Ring. Ring. Ring.
She picked it up trembling. "Hello, Karen’s Floral—"
"You disgusting, child-abusing monster!" a woman screamed through the receiver. "How dare you let your parents humiliate those poor children! I'm canceling my wedding floral contract with you right now!" Click.
Karen stared at the receiver in total shock. Within twenty minutes, over three hundred one-star reviews flooded her business’s Google page, driving her rating down to 1.1 stars. Her email inbox exploded with cancellation notices from clients.
By noon, the story had been picked up by a local Denver news blogger who posted an investigative breakdown titled: “The Truth Behind the Viral Apron Video: A Loving Single Father Betrayed by His Own Leeching Family.”
The article laid out everything: Thomas’s hard work as a self-made restaurateur, his devotion to his three children, and the revelation that his parents had been living off his wealth while publicly humiliating his kids.
By 2:00 PM, Robert and Helen’s phone was ringing continuously with angry calls from neighbors, former friends, and church members expressing absolute disgust at their behavior.
Panicked and humiliated, Robert called Thomas’s phone from a blocked landline number.
When Thomas finally picked up, Robert’s voice was cracked and frantic, completely stripped of his usual arrogant dominance.
"Thomas! Thomas, you have to help us!" Robert begged, his breath ragged. "People are standing outside our house taking pictures! Karen’s business is ruined! Kevin is crying in his room! Tell these crazy people on the internet to stop! Tell them it was all a mistake!"
Thomas sat in his quiet office above the diner, looking at a framed photograph of Rebecca, Samuel, and Jacob smiling on his desk.
"I didn't post that video, Dad," Thomas said, his voice completely calm. "Kevin posted it because he thought my children’s pain was funny. You and Helen created that cruel environment. You built the fire, Dad. I'm just letting it burn."
"Thomas, please!" Robert wept, dropping all his pride. "We’re your parents! Have mercy!"
"Mercy?" Thomas asked softly. "Did you show mercy to Jacob when he was crying with a rag in his hand? Did you show mercy to Rebecca?"
"Thomas—"
May you like
"Actions have consequences, Dad," Thomas interrupted quietly. "You spent years teaching me about 'humility.' Now it’s time for you to learn what it actually feels like."
Thomas hung up the phone and blocked the landline number forever.
