Chapter 4 - The Senator's Threat and Seraphina's Fury

The shockwave caused by Harrison Vance’s public consultation at Table Twenty-Seven rippled through the reception pavilion like an earthquake.

Up until that moment, the Sterling family and their social allies viewed me as an inconvenient ghost from Dominic’s past—a pathetic ex-wife who had crawled out from the woodwork to throw a temper tantrum at a high-society wedding. But Harrison Vance didn't bow to the Sterlings. Vance Global Capital managed assets that made the Sterling shipping fleet look like a row of rubber duckies in a bathtub.

When Harrison publicly addressed me as a major corporate entity and discussed an multi-million-dollar acquisition like Apex Logistics, the power dynamic in the room shifted instantly.

Whispers erupted across the tables.

“Did he say Apex Logistics?” “I thought Apex was bought out by an anonymous tech conglomerate last year...” “Wait... look at her dress. That’s an exclusive custom piece from Milan. Only three were made this season.” “And those kids... Good Lord, look at their eyes. They’re mini Dominics, but they have her posture.”

From the dais, Senator Richard Hastings—Seraphina’s father—turned a dangerous shade of crimson. His political career had been built on the illusion of impeccable family alliances and ironclad control. This circus was turning his daughter’s wedding into a national tabloid spectacle, and he wasn't going to let a woman he considered a nobody ruin his evening.

He stood up, smoothing his tie, and marched down the aisle toward our corner table. His face was set in the hard, practiced scowl of a career politician used to intimidating witnesses in congressional hearings.

I didn't blink as he stopped beside our table, casting a long, imposing shadow over my sons, who were busy examining the miniature silver compasses Harrison had gifted them.

"Mrs. Sterling—or whatever your legal surname happens to be now," Senator Hastings began, his voice dripping with condescension and veiled venom. "I don't know what kind of bitter, attention-seeking game you’re playing here, but you have crossed a definitive line."

I slowly set down my water glass, my gaze rising to meet his cold, gray eyes. I didn't stand up. When you hold all the cards, you don't need to rise to meet your opponents; you let them exhaust themselves standing.

"Senator Hastings," I replied smoothly, my tone light and conversational. "Congratulations on the wedding. It's always wonderful when two families with such... complicated tax histories merge."

A sharp intake of breath hissed from the surrounding tables. Hastings’s face flushed an ugly, mottled purple.

"Watch your tongue, young woman," Hastings snarled, leaning over the table, lowering his voice into a vicious whisper. "My daughter’s wedding day is not your platform for petty revenge. You march these children out of this estate right now, or I will ensure that every regulatory agency, tax board, and zoning commission in the state of Illinois scrutinizes every single business entity you claim to own. You think you can play with the big leagues? I can have your assets frozen before midnight."

I let out a soft, genuine laugh. It was a sound entirely devoid of fear.

"Senator," I said, tilting my head slightly. "Did Dominic’s mother not brief you on my portfolio before you signed the marriage settlement?"

Hastings frowned, momentarily thrown off by my calmness. "What are you talking about?"

"She was too busy planning where to seat me near the kitchen," I said, shaking my head with mock disappointment. "If she had done her due diligence—or if you had bothered to check who actually underwrote the municipal bonds for your last three senatorial campaigns—you would know that my digital marketing and logistics firm doesn't just operate in Illinois. We hold controlling debt on three of your primary campaign donors' real estate trusts."

Hastings froze. The blustering politician mask slipped, revealing a flicker of genuine panic in his eyes.

"You're... you're holding the debt on the Meridian properties?" he whispered.

"Among others," I smiled sweetly. "So please, Senator, go ahead and call the regulatory boards. Let's see how fast your campaign donors cut your funding when they find out their primary lender is reviewing their loan covenants. Would you like my CFO's direct line, or shall I have my assistant text it to your chief of staff?"

Before Hastings could sputter a response, Seraphina bolted from the high table. Her silk bridal train dragged across the pristine white carpet as she stormed down the aisle, her face twisted in absolute fury.

"Dad! What are you doing talking to her?!" Seraphina shrieked, tears of humiliation finally breaking through her carefully applied makeup. "This is my day! That woman and her bastards are ruining everything! Why hasn't security thrown them out on the street?!"

Leo looked up from his compass, blinking his large gray eyes innocently. He looked at Seraphina, then looked up at me.

"Mama, why is the lady in the white dress screaming? Is her cake burning?"

Nathan and Cole burst into giggles.

Seraphina looked like she was about to explode. She raised a trembling hand, pointing a manicured finger directly at my face. "You listen to me, you trashy—"

CLANG.

The heavy kitchen doors behind our table swung open violently, cutting her off. A terrified busboy carrying a towering tray of crystal champagne flutes tripped over the uneven floorboards.

The tray tilted.

Fifty glasses of expensive vintage champagne cascaded through the air in slow motion.

Directly toward Seraphina’s immaculate, five-thousand-dollar Vera Wang wedding gown.
