Chapter 8 - Blood and Broken Glass

The silence in the ballroom was absolute.
Camera shutters clicked like a swarm of angry locusts, capturing every drop of color draining from my face.
I opened my mouth to speak, but my throat was entirely dry. The ghost I had spent four years running from—the lie Marcus had manufactured to cover up his own multi-million-dollar embezzlement scheme—had finally caught up to me under the brightest lights in New York.
Ricardo didn't flinch. He didn't raise his voice.
He slowly slid his hand out from inside his jacket, his dark eyes locking onto Marcus with a terrifying, calm menace.
“Mr. Vance,” Ricardo said softly, stepping closer until he towered over Marcus by a full four inches. “You have exactly five seconds to turn around, walk out those doors, and swallow that federal warrant before I feed it to you piece by piece.”
Marcus’s smirk wavered slightly under the sheer, suffocating weight of Ricardo’s presence, but he quickly recovered, gesturing to the federal marshals standing behind him.
“You can threaten me all you want, Moretti, but you don't own the Department of Justice,” Marcus spat, nodding to the marshals. “Arrest her.”
Before the marshals could take a step forward, three of Ricardo’s elite bodyguards materialized from the crowd, their hands resting ominously inside their tuxedo jackets, their eyes fixed on the federal agents.
The ballroom erupted into sheer chaos. Reporters screamed, socialites dove behind tables, and the delicate balance between the law and the underworld fractured into a war zone.
“Elena, take my hand,” Ricardo ordered, his voice cutting through the panic.
He grabbed my wrist, pulling me hard against his side as he carved a path through the terrified crowd toward the private service exit.
“Mr. Moretti! You’re harboring a fugitive!” Marcus screamed over the din, lunging forward, but one of Ricardo’s men casually extended an elbow, sending Marcus crashing backward onto a dessert table amid a mountain of crushed wedding cake.
We burst through the service doors into the cold, rainy alleyway behind the hotel, where a bulletproof black Mercedes was idling with its engine roaring.
Ricardo shoved me into the back seat, diving in after me and slamming the heavy door shut just as three black SUVs screeched into the alley from the opposite end, blocking our escape.
“Blockaded!” the driver yelled over the radio. “We’ve got federal vans and armed locals pinning us in!”
Ricardo didn't hesitate. He pulled a heavy satellite phone from his pocket, dialing a single speed-dial number with frantic urgency.
“Call the docks,” Ricardo roared into the phone. “Activate Protocol Nine. Burn every shell company connected to the federal prosecutor’s office in the Eastern District. If they want a war, I’ll give them a federal shutdown by sunrise.”
I sat frozen in the back seat, trembling violently as tears streamed down my face.
“Ricardo... stop,” I choked out, covering my face with my hands. “Just let them take me. If you protect me, they’ll destroy your empire. They’ll take everything you built!”
Ricardo grabbed my wrists, pulling my hands away from my face. His dark eyes burned with a fierce, uncompromising intensity.
“Listen to me, Elena,” Ricardo said, his voice dropping into a harsh, fierce whisper. “I didn't spend five years living in the dark just to let some two-bit corporate criminal steal the only light that ever made it back into this house. You are not going to prison. You are not running anymore.”
Before I could answer, a deafening crash echoed from the front of the alley.
An armored tactical vehicle smashed through the wooden delivery gates, its high-beam headlights blinding us in a wall of harsh white light, while men in black body armor swarmed out from all sides with automatic weapons raised.
“Last warning! Step out of the vehicle with your hands on your head!” a megaphone roared through the rain.
Ricardo looked at me one last time, a dark, dangerous smile touching his lips.

“Hold on to something, Elena,” he whispered.
Then he reached down, pulled a heavy submachine gun from a hidden compartment beneath the seat, and blew out the bulletproof window of the Mercedes.
