Chapter 6 - Stripped of the Crown

The silence that followed the screening of the security footage lasted for five agonizing, endless seconds.
Then, the ballroom erupted into total chaos.
Whispers exploded into loud, indignant shouts. Prominent society matrons who had praised Vanessa just moments ago turned their backs in open disgust, pulling their daughters away as if her mere presence were contagious. Several corporate executives who owed favors to Don Carlos hastily set down their champagne glasses and headed for the side exits, desperate not to be associated with the unfolding scandal.
On stage, Don Carlos looked as though he had suffered a mild stroke. He gripped the edges of the wooden podium so hard his knuckles turned ghostly white, his eyes darting frantically across the room before locking onto me where I stood by the back pillar.
Vanessa was on her knees near the base of the stage, her makeup completely ruined by mascara-stained tears, sobbing hysterically as she pounded her fists against the polished hardwood floor.
“It’s a fake! It’s deepfake technology! Mateo ruined me! He set me up!” she screamed, her voice cracking into a desperate, feral wail that echoed off the soaring ceilings.
I didn’t rush toward the stage. I didn’t shout back. I simply walked forward, step by deliberate step, until I stood at the foot of the stairs leading up to the podium, looking up at Don Carlos and his shattered daughter.
“There are no deepfakes here, Carlos,” I said, my voice carrying clearly across the half-empty ballroom without even needing a microphone. “Every second of that footage is backed by server logs, time stamps, and federal notarization. And that is only the beginning.”
Alejandro stepped up beside me, holding a thick sheaf of legal documents and opening a digital folder that projected a second set of files onto the side screens: bank statements, Cayman Island wire transfer logs, and forensic audit reports.
“Furthermore,” Alejandro announced into the room, his voice crisp and authoritative, “as of 8:00 PM tonight, federal fraud charges have been filed against Vanessa Garza for the systematic embezzlement of over twelve million pesos from joint holding accounts, alongside documented extortion of domestic estate workers.”
Don Carlos staggered backward from the podium, his hand clutching his chest as his high-society empire evaporated beneath his feet.
“You... you ruined us,” Carlos whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and sheer disbelief.
“No, Carlos,” I replied coldly, looking him dead in the eye. “You and your daughter built a house of cards on the backs of hardworking people and thought your last name would protect you from gravity. Gravity finally caught up.”
Within twenty minutes, the gala had dissolved into an absolute rout. The police, acting on the emergency financial warrants filed by Alejandro, arrived discreetly through the service entrance to serve Vanessa with formal federal deposition notices and asset-freezing orders.

As Vanessa was led out through the side doors by her own panicked lawyers, hiding her face beneath a designer shawl while flashbulbs blinded her from every angle, she didn't look like an untouchable queen of Polanco anymore.
She looked like what she had always been beneath the silk and pearls: a fraud who had run out of lies.
