Chapter 3 - The Fracturing

The world didn't just turn against Julian; it devoured him. By noon, the "Sterling & Co." office building was swarming with federal agents. The digital dossier I had sent was a masterpiece of forensic accounting and moral indictment. Every offshore account, every shell company used to funnel assets to his mistress, and the internal memos documenting his neglect of Leo were now public record.

I spent the day in the hotel suite, watching the carnage unfold on the news. Julian’s face—once a symbol of corporate stoicism—was splashed across every screen. The narrative had shifted from a "critical merger" to a "critical scandal."

But Julian was a man built on ego, and a cornered rat doesn't simply lay down and die; it bites.

My phone, which I had unblocked for legal correspondence, erupted with a call from an unknown number. I answered it, my voice devoid of emotion.

"You’ve destroyed everything, Clara," Julian’s voice was a ragged shadow of his former self. He sounded breathless, frantic. "The board has suspended me. The SEC is at the house. My mother… she’s hysterical."

"And Leo?" I asked, my voice chillingly calm.

"Forget the boy for a second!" he hissed. "I need you to come back. You have the encryption keys to the legacy trust. If you release those, I can settle this. I can make this go away."

"You don't understand, Julian," I said, leaning back against the headboard. "I didn't destroy your life. I simply revealed it. You spent years constructing a glass house, and you spent your entire time inside throwing rocks at your own family. Did you really think it would stand forever?"

"I’ll kill you for this," he spat. The mask of the businessman had completely dissolved.

"You’ll try," I replied, ending the call.

I knew he would come for us. Not through the law—he had no leverage there—but through the shadows. I stood up, went to my suitcase, and retrieved the second phone I had prepared. I dialed a number I hadn’t touched in years—a contact from my time in the Middle East, a man who specialized in the kind of 'relocation' that involved disappearing entirely.

"The bird is out of the cage," I said when he answered. "The nest is on fire. I need the extraction plan."
