Chapter 5 - Springtime, True Freedom, and a New Beginning

One year later.

The spring air in the countryside outside the city was crisp, vibrant, and alive with the sweet scent of blooming apple blossoms and freshly turned earth.

The grand gardens surrounding our estate were a riot of color—deep purples, brilliant yellows, and soft pinks blooming across the manicured lawns.

I stood on the back veranda, holding a steaming mug of black coffee, watching the morning sunlight dance across the patio.

From the open French doors of her new studio came the soft, rhythmic sound of classical piano music mixed with the gentle humming of a very happy woman.

Esther walked out onto the veranda, wearing a light yellow sundress that caught the breeze. Her hair was tied back with a silk ribbon, her skin glowing with health and vitality, and her hands—once raw and blistered from scrubbing floors—were now adorned with soft clay smudges and a brand-new, custom-designed sapphire ring I had surprised her with on our second wedding anniversary.

She walked up behind me, wrapping her arms around my waist and pressing her cheek against my back.

“Good morning, husband,” she smiled, her voice rich with peace.

I turned around, setting my coffee mug down on the iron table, and pulled her into my arms, pressing a soft kiss to the top of her head.

“Good morning, my love,” I murmured. “How’s the new sculpture coming along?”

“It’s almost finished,” she beamed, her eyes sparkling with excitement. “I’m thinking of entering it into the city art showcase next month.”

“You should,” I said without hesitation. “You’re more talented than half the so-called artists Mother used to invite over.”

Esther laughed—a bright, carefree sound that chased away any lingering ghosts of the past.

We walked down the stone steps together, strolling hand-in-hand across the vibrant green lawn toward the garden gate. The past was a closed chapter, a dark storm we had survived together. The future stretched out before us like an endless, sunlit field—unbroken, beautiful, and entirely our own.

There were no basement kitchens. There were no cruel judges hiding in the shadows. There was only us, standing together in the brilliant, unyielding light of true freedom and unconditional love.
