Chapter 10 - The Quiet After the Storm

Spring arrived early that year, melting away the lingering winter frost and bringing new life to the trees lining our street.
Our house felt entirely different now. The heavy, suffocating weight that had lingered in the hallways since Eric first stepped through our front door was completely gone, replaced by an atmosphere of absolute safety and warmth.
One Saturday morning, I stood at our kitchen island, brewing fresh coffee while sunlight streamed through the sparkling windows.
My wife walked into the kitchen, carrying our baby on her hip. The little girl was laughing, grabbing lazily at a lock of her mother’s hair.
“Good morning,” my wife smiled, leaning against my shoulder as I handed her a mug.
“Morning,” I whispered, wrapping my arms around both of them, pulling them close against my chest.
We didn't talk about Eric. We didn't talk about my parents or the trial or the text messages that had nearly destroyed everything we built. Those ghosts no longer had any power over us.
