Chapter 8 - The Recovery

The weeks that followed the expulsion were a period of profound healing. With the threat gone, the house felt lighter, though the scars remained. Esther, once terrified of the sound of her own voice, began to reclaim her space, though the psychological toll of the prolonged sedatives and gaslighting was not something that healed overnight.

Preston shifted his focus entirely to her wellbeing. He hired specialists to help her navigate the trauma, ensuring she had a safe, controlled environment to rebuild her confidence. He spent his evenings sitting with her, listening to her talk about her fears, her memories of the kitchen, and her hopes for a future that was truly their own.

There were difficult days—days when Esther would catch herself flinching at a loud noise or apologizing for simply walking into a room. During these moments, Preston made sure to be present, to remind her that she owed no one an apology for existing. They began to strip the house of the "Eleanor aesthetic"—the stiff, cold decor that had dominated their lives—replacing it with things that felt warm, authentic, and uniquely theirs. It was a slow process, but for the first time in their marriage, they were building a home together instead of simply residing in an inheritance.
