Chapter 4 - The Secret History

The true story of the farm—and the betrayal that had led to their current predicament—was buried in an old, leather-bound diary that Elias kept in his suitcase. Elena didn't discover it until she helped her father pack.

She opened the worn pages. It wasn't just a ledger of farm expenses. It was a history of Elias’s friendship with Beatrice’s late husband, Arthur.

Thirty years ago, they had been partners. Arthur had been the one with the vision, but Elias had been the one with the grit. When Arthur had fallen ill, it was Elias who had managed the accounts, ensuring Arthur’s family was provided for. When Arthur passed, Elias had stepped back, wanting no recognition.

But there was a letter tucked into the back of the diary. It was from Beatrice, dated twenty years ago.

“I know the truth, Elias. I know you managed the accounts. I know you know how much money Arthur really had, and I know you know that I was the one who liquidated the reserves while he was dying. Keep your mouth shut, and you can live your quiet, pathetic life. If you ever speak of this, I will make sure your daughter never finds a place in this society.”

Elena’s hand trembled. It wasn't just class snobbery. It was blackmail.

Beatrice hadn't just hated them because they were 'country'; she hated them because they were the only living witnesses to the original crime that had built her fortune.

Elena rushed to Marcus’s office, the letter clutched in her hand.

"She wasn't just being a bully, Marcus," Elena said, breathless. "She was hiding a crime. Your mother didn't inherit the fortune. She stole it from her own husband while he was on his deathbed. My father knew, and she silenced him with the threat of ruining my future."

Marcus took the letter, his eyes scanning the lines. As he read, the color drained from his face. The woman he had spent his life trying to please, the woman he had defended against his own wife, was a fraud.

"She used me," Marcus whispered. "She used me to keep the secret buried."

"And now," Elena said, her voice filled with a dangerous resolve, "we’re going to dig it up."

The plan was simple: they wouldn't just cut Beatrice off. They would dismantle the false reality she had spent decades constructing. They would turn the light on the rot, and for the first time, they would ensure that the truth—no matter how painful—was the only thing that mattered.
