Chapter 7 - The Fugitive

The next forty-eight hours were a blur of police reports, formal statements, and the terrifying realization that my mother had vanished. When the police raided our home, they found the house empty. She had cleaned it as meticulously as she had 'cleaned' our lives.

However, they found the hidden server room. She hadn't just been gaslighting us; she had been recording us for months. Every intimate moment, every argument, every tear. It was a library of voyeurism.

"She’s smart, Elias," Detective Miller said, leaning over a map of the city. "She knows we’re looking for her. But she also knows that your mother has a history—one you didn't know about. Before you were born, she was involved in a similar 'caretaking' situation that ended in a suspicious accident. She’s been doing this for decades."

The search was intensified, but she was a ghost. She knew the blind spots of the city, the places where a woman of her age could blend into the background.

Then, I got the call. It was a burner phone—the one I’d left in my car.

"I have the baby, Elias," her voice came through the speaker, chillingly calm.

My blood turned to ice. "Where are you?"

"Somewhere you’ll never find us. Unless, of course, you realize that this was never about you. It was always about the legacy. I wanted a grandson who was mine to mold, without her interference. Bring the recordings to me, Elias. Destroy the evidence, and I’ll tell you where to find your son."

I looked at Detective Miller, who was frantically signaling for a trace. I knew she was lying. She wouldn't give him back.

"I'm coming," I said, my voice cold. "Just tell me where."

She gave me an address—an old, abandoned lake house where we used to spend summers. It was a trap, a final confrontation in the place where my childhood memories were forged. I told the police, but I knew I couldn't wait for them. If I didn't move now, I might lose my son forever. I headed to the lake, knowing that to save my family, I had to be willing to face the monster she had raised.
