Chapter 3 - The Audit of Betrayal

By 3:00 PM, my private security force had completely locked down Crestview Estates.

I left two armed guards outside Gwen’s hospital suite, along with a dedicated nursing staff personally vetted by Dr. Harrison. I then drove my SUV back to the mansion.

When my vehicle pulled into the long, iron-gated driveway of Crestview Estates, the scene looked like a tactical raid. Two black SUVs blocked the entrance. Marcus Vance stood near the front portico, flanked by four former military contractors dressed in dark suits.

Brenda was standing on the front porch, screaming at the top of her lungs, her silk blouse disheveled, her face red with rage. Gavin, my twenty-six-year-old younger brother, was pacing near the fountain, frantically typing on his phone.

"Lucas!" Brenda shrieked the moment she saw me step out of the car. "Tell these thugs to get off my property! How dare you subject your own mother to this humiliation? Those guards touched me! They grabbed my arms!"

I ignored her, walking straight past her toward Marcus.

"Report," I commanded.

"We seized all local servers," Marcus said, handing me an encrypted tablet. "Brenda told you six months ago that the house security system was broken and that the cameras were offline. She lied. The cameras were recording continuously onto a hidden local NAS drive in the basement utility room. She kept the recordings to monitor the house staff and keep them quiet."

"Do we have the footage?"

"All of it," Marcus said, his eyes hard. "Four hundred terabytes of high-definition video spanning the last eight months. My team has already pulled key logs. It confirms everything. The physical abuse, the forced labor, the food deprivation, and the systematic administration of liquid drops into her morning tea."

"Lucas!" Gavin shouted, marching up to me with a posture of fake bravado. "You've lost your mind! You're letting that wretched, low-class woman turn you against your own blood! Mom sacrificed her life for us after Dad died! You owe her everything!"

I turned to face my brother. Gavin was wearing a five-thousand-dollar designer suit, a gold Rolex I had gifted him for his college graduation, and shoes made of Italian leather. He had never worked an honest forty-hour week in his life. Every business venture he tried had failed, and I had quietly covered his debts, believing he was simply young and foolish.

"How much do you owe the Miami syndicate, Gavin?" I asked, my tone flat.

Gavin froze. The color drained from his face so fast he looked like a corpse. "What... what are you talking about?"

"Three million?" I stepped closer, my presence towering over him. "Or is it more now? Did you think my wife’s life was the price tag for your gambling debts?"

"Lucas, no! That's a lie! Gwen is crazy! She’s hallucinating from the pregnancy!" Gavin stammered, backing away until his spine hit the stone pillar of the porch.

Brenda rushed down the stairs, throwing herself between me and Gavin. "Don't you dare speak to your brother like that! He is your flesh and blood! That little orphan girl you married is nothing! She was a nobody working in a coffee shop when you met her! She's leeching off your success!"

"She sold her grandmother's inheritance so I could pay my first payroll, Mother," I said, every word dropping like lead. "She worked eighteen-hour days in a cold warehouse while you were taking cruises in the Mediterranean. She built my company with me. What did you do?"

"I gave you life!" Brenda yelled, pounding her fist against her chest. "I raised you! You belong to me!"

"No," I said. "I used to think I owed you a debt I could never repay. But today, I realized something. You didn't raise me out of love. You raised me as an investment property."

I gestured to Marcus. "Bring up the credit card statements."

Marcus tapped the tablet and projected a financial summary onto a portable screen his team had set up on the porch table.

"Over the last six months," Marcus read aloud, "the black card issued under Lucas Dawson’s business account recorded $1.8 million in cash withdrawals and high-end luxury purchases. Over $800,000 was transferred directly into offshore accounts registered under Gavin Dawson's name in the Cayman Islands. Another $400,000 went to a private notary firm owned by a woman named Victoria Vance—one of the dinner guests present today."

My eyes narrowed. "Victoria Vance? The lawyer?"

"Yes," Marcus continued. "We intercepted a draft legal filing on Brenda’s personal computer. It was a petition for full emergency guardianship over Gwen Dawson on the grounds of severe psychiatric incapacity, alongside an advance health care directive giving Brenda sole decision-making authority over the unborn child."

I looked at Brenda. Her eyes darted left and right, looking for an exit, but my security guards stood like iron statues at every corner.

"You were going to let her die during childbirth," I said, the truth hanging heavy in the warm afternoon air. "You were going to sign a order refusing emergency intervention for Gwen, take the baby, claim guardianship, and use the child to control my estate."

Brenda’s expression transformed. The fake motherly outrage melted away, replaced by a dark, malignant sneer.

"And what if I was?" she hissed, dropping all pretense. "You think you're so smart, Lucas? You think you built this kingdom on your own? I made you who you are! You owe me every dollar in your bank account! That weak, pathetic girl didn't deserve this house, she didn't deserve these clothes, and she certainly didn't deserve to bear the Dawson heir!"

"You're right about one thing," I said, stepping back and pulling my phone from my pocket. "She didn't deserve this house. Because this house is a crime scene."

I hit speed dial. "Detective Miller? This is Lucas Dawson. I am standing at my residence with the suspects, the digital footage, the forensic financial audit, and the preliminary hospital toxicology reports. You can execute the warrants now."

Four Atlanta Police patrol cars, sirens wailing, turned into the long driveway, their red and blue lights flashing through the manicured hedges of Crestview Estates.
