Chapter 5 - Following the Money

At 10:30 AM, I sat inside a tinted black SUV parked two blocks away from the financial district headquarters of Apex Holdings LLC.

Beside me sat Nina Park, her laptop open on her lap, displaying a complex, sprawling spiderweb map of bank accounts, shell companies, and wire transfers. On my left sat Detective James Reyes, a senior investigator from the State Financial Crimes Unit, holding a binder full of search warrants signed twenty minutes ago by a superior court judge.

“Here’s the complete money trail, Detective,” I said, pointing my stylus at the screen. “At 2:14 PM on Tuesday, while I was mid-air between Chicago and Bellmont, $800,000 was moved from Vanguard Compliance Group’s secondary emergency reserve account at First National Bank.”

“The authorization code?” Detective Reyes asked, leaning in.

“My private corporate token,” I replied. “Which Daniel retrieved from my locked home office safe using a duplicate key he forged three months ago. From First National, the funds hit an intermediary account registered to V&D Real Estate Management in Delaware. Four hours later, $400,000 was transferred to an offshore account in the Cayman Islands, and the remaining $400,000 was wired directly to an escrow account at Bellmont Title to purchase a commercial warehouse under Lorraine’s name.”

Detective Reyes let out a low whistle. “He didn't even try to hide it through multiple layers.”

“He didn't think he needed to,” Nina added. “He assumed Evelyn would come home, find Margaret near death or completely confused, panic over the domestic crisis, and take months to notice the missing reserves. By the time her corporate auditors flagged the discrepancy, Daniel planned to have Margaret placed in an out-of-state asylum and file for divorce, claiming Evelyn was mentally unstable.”

“And the lake house?” Reyes asked.

“The lake house is worth $3.2 million,” I said. “It has been in Margaret Hale’s family for three generations. Daniel filed a fraudulent Quitclaim Deed transferring full ownership from Margaret’s revocable trust to Apex Holdings, listing himself as the sole managing director. He signed Margaret’s name using a signature machine he ordered through his business account.”

Detective Reyes turned to look at me, his eyes filled with professional admiration. “Most people in your position would have panicked and called 911 the second they found the old woman locked in the room.”

“Panic is an emotional luxury, Detective,” I said coldly, closing my tablet. “I run a forensic compliance firm. When someone tries to rob me and poison my family, I don't panic. I build an airtight case.”

My phone buzzed. It was a call from Daniel.

I signaled Detective Reyes to stay quiet, set the phone to record, and put it on speaker.

“Hi, Daniel,” I said, keeping my tone light and conversational.

“Hey, sweetie!” Daniel’s voice boomed through the car speakers, bright and cheerful. “Just checking in on you. How is Grandma doing this morning? Did she give you any trouble with her breakfast?”

“She drank every drop of her broth, Daniel,” I said smoothly. “She’s very quiet now. Almost completely motionless.”

I heard a faint, triumphant exhale on the other end of the line.

“That’s... that’s good, honey,” Daniel said, trying to sound sympathetic. “Dr. Harrison said the sedatives would help her rest. Listen, I’m at the office right now, but I have a quick favor to ask. Our personal accountant needs a quick routine verification signature for our joint tax return. I left the document in a blue folder on my desk in the home study. Could you swing by Bellmont Title around noon and drop it off?”

Nina looked at me and nodded vigorously.

“Of course, Daniel,” I replied softly. “I’ll bring the folder right to the title office at noon.”

“You’re the best, Evelyn,” Daniel said, his voice dripping with false devotion. “I love you.”

“I’ll see you soon, Daniel,” I said, and disconnected the call.

Detective Reyes unbolted his sidearm holster, checking the magazine. “He’s walking straight into the closing room with the forged deeds.”

“And we’re going to be sitting in the room next door,” Nina smiled.
