Chapter 5 - The Boardroom Coup

By Wednesday afternoon, the scandal had detonated across the regional business and tech news syndicates throughout the Pacific Northwest.
“Prominent Tech Entrepreneur Mark Harlan Implicated in Federal Financial Fraud; Aura Media Assets Seized in Major Enforcement Raid.”
The headlines flashed across television screens in cafes, corporate lobbies, and airport terminals across the state. Footage of federal marshals hauling boxes of financial records out of Mark’s downtown office—followed by shots of Mark and Elena attempting to shield their faces from news cameras outside the federal courthouse—played on a continuous loop.
The social and professional circle they had spent years cultivating—investors, tech executives, country club acquaintances who had nodded politely at their cocktail parties—evaporated overnight. Within twenty-four hours of the indictment, Mark’s name had been scrubbed from the board of directors of every tech incubator he advised, and his primary venture capital backers formally severed all ties with his firm.
They had built their entire existence on the illusion of untouchable status, arrogance, and deception. They had assumed that because I was quiet, professional, and often away on business, no one would look twice at a suspicious corporate ledger or a dismantled child's bedroom.
They had simply forgotten who they were dealing with.
I sat in the executive corner office of Miller & Associates Consulting—my firm—overlooking the glittering expanse of the downtown skyline through crystal-clear glass windows.
The door opened softly, and Arthur Vance walked in, carrying a final set of notarized settlement documents.
"The emergency divorce petition and asset division agreement have been filed under seal," Arthur announced, laying the heavy leather folder on my desk. "Mark has agreed to a complete, uncontested forfeiture of all marital property, full primary custody of Maya granted to you, and a waiver of all spousal support claims in exchange for the federal prosecutor agreeing to drop the maximum RICO enhancement charges."
I looked down at the documents, tracing my fingers along the signature lines where Mark had already signed his name in shaky, defeated handwriting.
"And Elena?" I asked.
"She’s facing full prosecution on the wire fraud counts," Arthur replied smoothly. "Her boutique has been seized by the receiver, and her bank accounts are frozen solid. She's currently looking for a defense attorney who will take her case pro bono, because she's completely broke."
I nodded slowly, feeling a deep, profound sense of closure settle over my chest.
"Thank you, Arthur. For everything."
"Just doing my job, Sarah," Arthur smiled, turning on his heel and walking out of the office, closing the heavy oak door behind him with a soft, satisfying click.
I sat alone in the quiet expanse of my office for a long moment, watching the afternoon sun cast golden rays across the skyline.
My phone buzzed against the mahogany desk.
It was a text message from Maya:
“Mom, can we order pizza tonight and watch a movie in my new room? The painters finished the lavender walls, and it looks even better than before!”
A genuine, warm smile broke across my face.

I picked up my phone and replied instantly:
“Double pepperoni and extra cheese, sweetie. I’ll be home by six.”
