Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Accomplice

The sun dipped below the jagged mountain peaks, casting long, bruised shadows across the valley. While Detective Miller and her team worked to secure warrants for Gregory Cole’s downtown offices, Ethan focused on restoring normalcy to the ravaged interior of the house.
Together with Mara, the loyal housekeeper who had finally returned from her forced exile at her sister’s place in the neighboring town, they began the task of undoing Vanessa’s reign of terror.
They unlocked the guest room upstairs—the room Vanessa had stripped bare to turn into a makeshift prison cell for Margaret—and carried back the plush armchairs, the warm floral paintings, and the heavy velvet curtains that blocked out the cold.
As Ethan heaved a cherrywood dresser back into its rightful place against the wall, his phone buzzed sharply in his pocket.
It was an unknown number with a local area code.
He swiped to answer.
"Captain Vance," a smooth, cultured, but distinctly nervous voice spoke through the speaker. "My name is Gregory Cole. I believe you’re currently reviewing documents bearing my firm’s letterhead regarding the Vale estate."
Ethan’s grip on his phone tightened until his knuckles turned white. "Cole. You’ve got a lot of nerve calling this number."
"Hear me out, Captain," Cole urged, his voice dropping into a frantic whisper. "I had nothing to do with the physical confinement of your mother. That was entirely Vanessa’s doing. She manipulated me, she lied to me about your mother’s legal consent, and she forged my signature on those closing documents!"
"Is that why your encrypted messaging logs show you coaching her on how to bypass the state probate court?" Ethan asked, his tone dripping with lethal sarcasm.
A heavy silence hung on the line for several seconds.
"Look," Cole said, his voice cracking. "I know when I’m cornered. The federal agents are already outside my office building downtown. If I cooperate, if I hand over the master keys to the offshore accounts and sign a full confession detailing Vanessa’s embezzlement scheme, will the U.S. Attorney’s office consider a reduced sentencing recommendation?"
Ethan walked over to the bedroom window, looking out over the sprawling, snow-dusted lawns where the iron gates stood tall and secure once more.
"You don't get to bargain with me, Cole," Ethan said quietly. "You helped steal from an elderly woman and conspired to destroy my family. You can give the federal agents everything you have right now, or you can rot in a federal penitentiary right beside my wife. Those are your only two options."
"I’ll send the transfer keys," Cole blurted out, panic bleeding through every syllable. "Check your secure military email in five minutes. Everything—every account, every hidden asset, every offshore routing number—it’s all there."

The line clicked dead.
Ethan lowered his phone, exhaling a slow, steady breath. The financial net had closed completely. There was no escape hatch left for the conspirators.
