Chapter 6 - The Web of Accomplices Unravels

The federal investigation didn't stop with Dr. Hayes.
Once prosecutors began pulling the financial thread of Eleanor’s criminal enterprise, the entire network of corrupt associates, shady notaries, and bribed officials began to unravel like a cheap sweater.
Julian Garrison kept me updated daily through encrypted digital briefings.
“The adoption agency director cut a full plea deal yesterday,” Garrison told me over a secure video call on Monday evening. “She provided the complete paper trail proving that your mother had deposited fifty thousand dollars into a Cayman Islands account under the director’s maiden name to guarantee the expedited placement of Maya into a pre-selected, off-grid foster-to-adopt ring.”
“A human trafficking ring operating under the guise of private adoption,” I said, my jaw tightening.
“Precisely. The FBI is currently raiding three separate intermediary agencies across four states linked to that network. Your mother wasn't just a desperate, scheming matriarch; she was deeply embedded in an illegal underground placement syndicate that preyed on vulnerable families for decades.”
I shook my head in disbelief. “And Marcus?”
“Marcus is currently trying to cut his own deal by throwing your mother completely under the bus,” Garrison chuckled darkly. “He’s claiming he was merely a bullied subordinate acting under duress. Unfortunately for him, our forensic accountants uncovered sixty separate wire transfers moving stolen trust funds directly into his personal cryptocurrency wallets. The jury won't buy duress when the ledger shows he was buying luxury sports cars and funding high-stakes poker games in Las Vegas.”
“When does the trial begin?”
“We aren't going to trial, Daniel,” Garrison smiled. “The evidence is so overwhelming, airtight, and catastrophic that both defense teams have formally requested plea negotiations to avoid maximum consecutive federal sentences. The District Attorney is offering a baseline of twenty-five years without parole for Eleanor, and fifteen for Marcus.”

“Take it,” I said without hesitation. “I don't ever want to step foot in a courtroom with them again. I just want this chapter closed so my family can live in peace.”
“It’s closed,” Garrison said softly. “You won, Daniel. You brought your family back from the dead.”
