PART 2: THE SECRET INSIDE THE ENVELOPE

The silence in the hotel lobby felt unbearable.

Dozens of guests stood frozen, pretending not to watch while listening to every word.

Ethan remained several feet away from Olivia.

The blonde woman stood beside him, visibly uncomfortable.

Margaret and James had moved closer to their daughter.

No one knew what would happen next.

Not even Olivia.

Because until that morning, she thought the worst thing she could discover was an affair.

She was wrong.

Very wrong.

Slowly, Olivia reached into her purse.

Her hands trembled.

Not from fear.

From heartbreak.

The sealed envelope she had received only hours earlier felt heavier than it should.

Ethan noticed it immediately.

And the moment he did, panic flashed across his face.

Real panic.

The kind that cannot be faked.

"What is that?"

Olivia looked at him.

"You tell me."

Ethan's expression darkened.

"Olivia..."

But she was already opening it.

Several documents slid into her hand.

Bank statements.

Wire transfers.

Property records.

And one document that made her stomach turn every time she looked at it.

Earlier that day, Olivia had received an anonymous package at home.

No return address.

No explanation.

Inside were copies of financial records connected to Ethan's company.

At first she assumed it was some kind of mistake.

Then she started reading.

And the numbers didn't make sense.

Large transfers.

Hidden accounts.

Money moving between companies she had never heard of.

Thousands became hundreds of thousands.

Hundreds of thousands became millions.

The deeper she looked, the worse it became.

And one name appeared repeatedly.

The same name standing beside Ethan right now.

Claire Morgan.

The blonde woman.

Olivia held up one of the documents.

"Would anyone like to explain why my husband's company transferred over two million dollars into an account belonging to her?"

The lobby erupted in whispers.

Claire's eyes widened.

Ethan immediately stepped forward.

"Stop."

The single word revealed everything.

Because innocent people ask questions.

Guilty people try to stop them.

Olivia noticed.

So did everyone else.

James took the document from his daughter.

His face grew pale as he scanned the paperwork.

"What is this?"

No one answered.

Margaret grabbed another page.

Then another.

The shock in her eyes deepened.

"Ethan..."

Her voice cracked.

"What have you done?"

Ethan looked trapped.

Because there was no denying the documents.

The records were authentic.

Signed.

Verified.

Time-stamped.

Then something unexpected happened.

Claire suddenly spoke.

"I didn't know she was your wife."

Everyone turned toward her.

Even Ethan.

The blonde woman looked genuinely shaken.

"I swear."

Olivia stared at her.

"What?"

Claire swallowed hard.

"Ethan told me he was divorced."

The lobby exploded into murmurs.

Ethan closed his eyes.

As if watching his carefully constructed life collapse in real time.

Claire continued.

"He said the marriage ended over a year ago."

Olivia felt physically sick.

Not because of Claire.

Because she believed her.

The shock on the young woman's face couldn't be faked.

She had been lied to too.

For several moments, nobody spoke.

Then Olivia noticed something.

Claire seemed less worried about the affair than the financial documents.

Much less.

The woman kept staring at the paperwork.

Specifically one page.

A page showing transfers made only weeks earlier.

Finally Claire whispered:

"No..."

Olivia frowned.

"What?"

Claire pointed toward a company listed on the document.

Her face had turned white.

"That's not my account."

The room became silent again.

Olivia blinked.

"What?"

Claire took the paper.

Studied it carefully.

Then shook her head.

"That's not mine."

Ethan looked like he might collapse.

And suddenly Olivia understood.

The transfers weren't going to Claire.

Someone had used her name.

The realization spread through the room.

One horrifying possibility after another.

Claire wasn't necessarily the beneficiary.

She might have been a cover.

A distraction.

A convenient explanation.

Which raised an even bigger question.

If the money wasn't going to Claire...

where was it going?

Then a voice answered from behind them.

"That's exactly what we're trying to find out."

Everyone turned.

Three individuals had just entered the lobby.

Two wore dark suits.

The third carried a leather briefcase.

Federal investigators.

The badge hanging from the lead agent's belt caught the light.

Ethan immediately stepped backward.

Olivia noticed.

And so did the investigators.

The lead agent approached calmly.

"Mr. Carter."

Ethan said nothing.

The agent opened a folder.

"We've been attempting to contact you all day."

A chill moved through Olivia's body.

This wasn't about an affair anymore.

This was something much bigger.

The investigator removed several documents.

Then placed them on a nearby table.

Every color drained from Ethan's face.

Because he recognized them.

Immediately.

"Where did you get those?"

The agent ignored the question.

Instead, he looked directly at Olivia.

"Mrs. Carter, the package you received today wasn't sent by accident."

Olivia stared.

"What do you mean?"

The investigator's expression became grim.

"It was sent by someone inside your husband's company."

The entire lobby fell silent.

The agent continued.

"They believed their life was in danger."

A collective gasp swept through the room.

Olivia felt her knees weaken.

Her hand instinctively moved to her stomach.

The baby kicked again.

As if reminding her to stay strong.

Then the investigator revealed the one thing nobody expected.

The affair.

The lies.

The hidden money.

They were all connected.

And at the center of everything was a secret Ethan had spent years protecting.

May you like

A secret powerful enough that someone was willing to risk their life exposing it.
