Chapter 7 - The Exile and the Audit

By 6:00 P.M. that evening, Vivian was sitting in the living room of her Oak Ridge home, drinking a glass of red wine, trying desperately to calm her nerves. She had turned off her phone to avoid the hundreds of furious text messages and comments flooding her accounts.

She told herself she still had her wealth. She still had her grand house, her country club membership, and her young boyfriend, Chad. She could simply move to Florida, start fresh, and leave her ungrateful children behind.

Suddenly, her front door swung open.

Chad walked in carrying three large leather duffel bags. He looked nervous, his eyes darting around the foyer.

“Chad, sweetie!” Vivian said, standing up with a relieved smile. “Oh, thank God you’re here. My children have gone completely insane, but don't worry, we’re going to pack up and go to Miami for a few weeks—”

“Vivian, stop,” Chad interrupted her cold, pulling his hand away when she tried to touch his arm. “My credit card just got declined at the gas station.”

Vivian frowned. “What? That’s impossible. It’s tied to the business account.”

“I checked the online banking app, Vivian!” Chad yelled, tossing his duffel bags onto the floor. “The entire business account is locked! My car payment bounced! My personal card is frozen! What the hell is going on?!”

Vivian ran to her computer on the desk, opening her primary banking portal.

A bright red warning banner flashed across the top of her screen:

ACCOUNT STATUS: FROZEN BY COURT ORDER

REASON: LEGAL INJUNCTION / FIDUCIARY AUDIT

AVAILABLE BALANCE: $0.00

Vivian slammed her hands onto the keyboard, screaming in frustration. “No! No! He can’t do this! That’s my money!”

Before Chad could ask another question, two uniformed deputies from the Travis County Sheriff’s Office stepped up to the open front door, accompanied by a process server in a dark suit.

“Vivian Mercer?” the process server asked clearly.

“What do you want?!” Vivian shrieked.

“You are hereby served with an Emergency Injunction freezing all trust-related assets, along with a formal Notice of Deposition regarding Fraud and Misappropriation of Trust Capital,” the server said, handing her a thick legal packet.

The deputy sheriff stepped forward. “And ma’am, we are also here to enforce a temporary protective order filed on behalf of Daniel Mercer and Emma Mercer. You are prohibited from coming within five hundred yards of their residence, their workplaces, or the minor child Oliver Mercer.”

Chad stared at Vivian in absolute horror. “Fraud? Misappropriation? Injunctions? What did you do?!”

“Chad, baby, listen to me!” Vivian begged, reaching for his arm. “It’s just a misunderstanding! My son is trying to ruin me!”

“Don't touch me!” Chad yelled, backing away toward the door, grabbing his bags. “You told me you were a millionaire! You told me that money was yours! I’m not getting dragged into a federal fraud case for you!”

May you like

Chad turned around and sprinted out the front door, slamming it behind him, leaving Vivian standing alone in her grand, empty mansion.

She fell onto her knees on the marble floor, surrounded by legal papers, crying tears of pure panic as her fake life disintegrated around her.
