Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Trap

The top floor of the Sterling Tower sparkled in the morning sun. High above Wall Street, the grand boardroom was filled with fifteen of the most powerful corporate directors in New York.

At the head of the long mahogany table stood Richard Vance—not my security chief, but Uncle Arthur's right-hand man on the board, Senator Richard Vance (no relation to my security chief).

"Ladies and gentlemen," Richard announced, tapping his pen on the polished wood. "As you know, our beloved CEO, Julian Sterling, suffered a life-altering tragedy three months ago. While we mourn his physical state, Sterling Enterprises cannot operate without a functional helm. The stock dropped four percent this week alone."

"Where is Arthur?" one of the female board members asked, looking at the empty leather chair at the head of the table. "He called this emergency session."

"Arthur is delayed with urgent personal matters," Richard lied smoothly. "However, he has authorized me to present this document: a petition for corporate conservatorship. By signing this, we temporarily transfer Julian's voting control to Arthur until Julian is deemed medically fit."

"And who certified Julian as unfit?" another member demanded.

"His fiancée, Victoria Vance, and his personal physician, Dr. Hayes," Richard replied, sliding folders across the table. "Dr. Hayes submitted a formal report this morning stating Julian is suffering from severe post-traumatic depression and cognitive decline."

The room broke into uneasy chatter. Several members reached for their pens, ready to sign.

THUD.

The heavy double oak doors at the end of the boardroom burst open.

Every head turned.

Two men in black suits stepped inside first, securing the doorway. Then came the sound of deliberate, rhythmic footsteps clicking against the polished hardwood floor.

I stepped into the room.

I wore a tailored three-piece charcoal suit, a silver tie, and a dark blue silk pocket square. My posture was military-straight. My eyes scanned the room like an apex predator evaluating its prey.

Beside me walked David Coleman, carrying a thick leather briefcase, and behind us stood four federal agents in uniform.

Pens dropped. Papers fell from numb fingers. Two board members actually stood up in utter disbelief.

"J-Julian?!" Richard gasped, his face turning the color of chalk. "You... you're walking?!"

"Good morning, gentlemen. Ladies," I said, my voice smooth and resonant, carrying effortlessly through the room. I walked straight to the head of the table, pulling back the big leather executive chair that Arthur had coveted for years.

I sat down, crossing my legs effortlessly.

"You look surprised, Richard," I said, leaning back. "Did you think I was going to roll in here in a wheelchair?"

"Julian, this is... unbelievable!" a veteran board member stammered, a smile breaking out on his face. "The news said you were paralyzed!"

"The news was fed false information by a criminal syndicate operating within this very company," I said coldly. I gestured to David Coleman, who stepped forward and opened his briefcase.

"Thirty minutes ago," David announced, "the Federal Bureau of Investigation executed arrest warrants for Arthur Sterling, Marcus Brody, and Dr. Robert Hayes."

A collective gasp echoed through the room.

"Dr. Hayes was arrested for administering illegal neurotoxins to Mr. Sterling to simulate permanent paralysis," David continued, laying stacks of bank records onto the table. "Arthur Sterling and Marcus Brody have been charged with conspiracy to commit attempted murder, corporate fraud, and insider trading."

Richard began to tremble. "This... this is absurd! Arthur would never—"

"Arthur already confessed, Richard," I interrupted softly. "He spent the last six hours in an interrogation room at 26 Federal Plaza. And do you know what he gave up in exchange for a lighter sentence?"

I pressed a button on the conference phone in the middle of the table. A recording began to play.

Arthur's frantic voice filled the room: "It wasn't just me! Richard helped me forge the proxy votes! Richard was taking kickbacks from the hedge fund that tried to short the stock last week!"

The boardroom went deathly quiet.

Richard fell back into his chair, looking like he was about to vomit.

"Federal agents are waiting in the lobby for you, Richard," I said, resting my chin on my laced fingers. "You have thirty seconds to resign from this board and exit gracefully before they put you in handcuffs in front of the press gathered downstairs."
