Chapter 5 - The Final Betrayal

"You think this is the end?" I asked, my voice steady despite the fear gnawing at my gut.
Clara stood up, walking toward me with a grace that was chilling. "It is the end, Mark. For you. You have two choices: leave now, take what little remains in your personal checking account, and disappear, or we call the authorities ourselves and tell them you’ve been threatening us. You’re a man who just abused his wife and is now experiencing a mental breakdown. Who do you think they’ll believe?"
I looked at the monitors. I saw the transfer logs. I saw the date: Monday. They were waiting for the final liquidation. They had planned this for years, a long-con designed to leave me empty, discredited, and alone.
"I’m not leaving," I said, my voice dropping to a whisper.
"Then you’re a fool," Clara replied. She gestured to Julian, who reached under the desk. I braced myself for a weapon, but he pulled out a phone—and hit play.
The speakers in the room filled with a recording of my own voice. It was from the argument in the kitchen, but it was edited, spliced, and distorted. It sounded like I was the one threatening Elena. It sounded like I was the one admitting to stealing the money.
"You’ve been recorded, Mark. Every step of the way," Clara said. "Goodbye, little brother."
She turned back to the screens, dismissing me as if I were already dead. But as I backed toward the door, I saw something she hadn't noticed. On the far end of the server rack, a small red light was blinking—a hardware diagnostic tool I had installed years ago, back when we were still running this business legitimately. It was a remote access point.

I didn't leave. I moved toward the shadows near the back server stack. I had five minutes before their main system performed its nightly backup. If I could get to that terminal, I could bypass their security, dump the real logs, and send an automated alert to the authorities.
The game wasn't over. It was just changing sides. I reached for the terminal cable, my heart pounding in sync with the blinking light. I would destroy them, even if it meant destroying myself in the process.
