Chapter 10 - The True Inheritance

That evening, the grand dining room of the estate was filled with warmth, laughter, and light.
Over thirty guests sat around the long oak table—Detective Miller, Marcus Sterling, doctors from St. Jude’s, community leaders, and friends who had stood by us through every step of the battle.
I stood at the head of the table, holding a crystal glass of sparkling water, tapping it gently with my spoon to quiet the room.
“Thirty-two years ago,” I began, looking around at the smiling faces, “I spent my career chasing down people who thought money and arrogance made them invisible to justice. I thought my greatest achievements were the cases I won in courtrooms.”
I turned my gaze to Claire, who sat at my right hand, glowing with strength, grace, and happiness.
“But sitting here tonight, looking at my daughter—a woman who fought her way out of the darkest storm and built a sanctuary for others—I know my greatest achievement was simply being her father.”
The room erupted into warm, enthusiastic applause. Glasses clinked, toasts were made, and music filled the warm, bright air of the mansion.
After dinner, Claire and I walked out onto the front porch, watching the quiet stars sparkling above the clear night sky.
“Dad,” Claire whispered, leaning her head against my shoulder. “Thank you for turning around in the rain.”
I wrapped my arm around her, holding her tight against the cool night breeze.

“I’ll always turn around for you, sweetheart,” I said softly. “Always.”
The storm was long gone, the dark house was full of light, and the legacy we built together would stand forever.
