PART 2: Room 814

The elevator felt impossibly slow.

Every floor brought her closer to an answer she wasn't sure she wanted.

When the doors opened on the eighth floor, Emily stepped into a silent hallway.

Room 814 stood at the end.

A soft glow escaped beneath the door.

Her heart pounded.

She knocked.

No answer.

She knocked again.

Still nothing.

Then she noticed the door wasn't fully closed.

Someone had forgotten to latch it.

Emily pushed gently.

The door opened.

And her entire world shattered.

Daniel stood beside the bed.

A young blonde woman sat wrapped in a hotel sheet.

The room smelled of perfume and expensive wine.

For several seconds nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

The only sound was rain striking the window.

Daniel's face turned white.

"Emily..."

The single word sounded like a confession.

Emily stepped inside.

She looked at the bed.

At the scattered clothing.

At the woman.

Then back at her husband.

The husband who had promised to love her forever.

The husband who once worked two jobs to help her through college.

The husband she had trusted more than anyone.

"So it was true."

Her voice barely rose above a whisper.

Daniel opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Emily slowly unfolded the letter.

The paper trembled in her hand.

"I wanted proof before I believed it."

The blonde woman lowered her eyes.

Shame filled her face.

Daniel took a step forward.

"Please let me explain."

Emily almost laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

Because after everything, those were the words he chose.

Explain.

As though betrayal could be explained.

As though eleven years of marriage could be reduced to a misunderstanding.

The room felt smaller.

Heavier.

Daniel looked desperate.

"I never meant for this to happen."

Emily stared at him.

Never meant?

Months of lies.

Dozens of secret meetings.

Hotel rooms.

Excuses.

How many choices had led to this moment?

How many opportunities had he had to stop?

The silence between them became unbearable.

Then something unexpected happened.

The young woman spoke.

"I'm sorry."

Emily turned toward her.

Tears streamed down the woman's face.

"I didn't know he was married at first."

Daniel's eyes widened.

"Sarah—"

She ignored him.

"He told me you were separated."

The room froze.

Emily slowly looked back at her husband.

The expression on his face told her everything.

It was true.

May you like

He hadn't lied only to his wife.

He had lied to everyone.
