CHAPTER 2: THE LETTER HE FEARED

The penthouse fell completely silent.

Even the storm outside seemed to fade.

Evelyn Harper stared at the envelope in her trembling hands.

Daniel's face had gone completely pale.

Emma noticed immediately.

Not guilt.

Not embarrassment.

Fear.

Pure fear.

The kind of fear a person feels when a secret they've buried for years suddenly rises to the surface.

"What is it?"

Emma asked quietly.

Neither Evelyn nor Daniel answered.

That silence told Emma everything she needed to know.

Slowly, she pushed herself up from the marble floor.

Ignoring the pain in her arm.

Ignoring the exhaustion weighing down her body.

"Give it to me."

Evelyn hesitated.

"Emma..."

"Give it to me."

The older woman reluctantly handed over the envelope.

Emma stared at the handwriting.

She didn't recognize it.

But Daniel clearly did.

His breathing had become shallow.

Almost panicked.

With trembling fingers, Emma broke the seal.

Inside was a single letter.

And a flash drive.

The room became still.

Emma unfolded the paper.

The letter began with six words that immediately sent a chill through her body.

If you're reading this, Daniel failed.

Emma looked up.

Daniel lowered his eyes.

Her stomach tightened.

Then she continued reading.

My name is Olivia Brooks.

You don't know me.

But you deserve the truth before it's too late.

Emma felt her heart begin to pound.

Olivia.

The same name she had seen repeatedly in the photographs.

The woman Daniel had supposedly been having an affair with.

Her eyes moved quickly across the page.

Then everything changed.

Because the story wasn't what she expected.

Not even close.

According to the letter, Olivia had never been Daniel's mistress.

She had been his sister.

His half-sister.

A sister nobody knew existed.

Emma looked up in shock.

"What?"

Daniel closed his eyes.

Years of secrets crashing down around him.

"It's true."

Emma stared at him.

Unable to process what she had heard.

"What do you mean sister?"

Daniel sank into a nearby chair.

Looking suddenly exhausted.

"My father had another child before he met my mother."

Evelyn looked away.

Ashamed.

Because she already knew.

And had helped hide it.

For nearly thirty years.

Daniel continued.

"My father abandoned them."

The words hung heavily in the room.

"Olivia and her mother lived in poverty while we lived here."

Emma felt sick.

The photographs.

The meetings.

The money transfers.

Everything suddenly looked different.

Not evidence of an affair.

Evidence of support.

Evidence of family.

Then why hide it?

"Because my father threatened me."

Everyone turned toward the doorway.

A new voice had entered the room.

A woman.

Olivia.

She stood there soaked from the rain.

Holding a duplicate folder.

Daniel immediately stood.

"Olivia."

Emma stared at her.

The woman from the photographs.

The woman she had spent hours hating.

The woman who wasn't the enemy at all.

Olivia slowly stepped inside.

"He promised to tell you."

She said softly.

"He just never found the courage."

Emma's heart sank.

Because she could see the truth in Daniel's eyes.

The secret had been real.

But not the betrayal she imagined.

Then Olivia looked toward the flash drive still resting on the coffee table.

"Show her."

Daniel froze.

"No."

Olivia's expression hardened.

"She deserves to know."

Emma picked up the flash drive.

"What is on this?"

Neither sibling answered.

That terrified her.

Slowly, she inserted the drive into a laptop.

A series of files appeared.

Legal documents.

Financial records.

Audio recordings.

And one video.

Dated two months earlier.

Emma clicked play.

The screen showed a private office.

A familiar face sat behind the desk.

Richard Harper.

Daniel's father.

One of the most powerful businessmen in the country.

The founder of the Harper fortune.

The grandfather her unborn child would one day know.

Emma watched as Richard leaned toward the camera.

Then she heard the words that changed everything.

"If Emma finds out where the money is coming from, she'll start asking questions."

The room froze.

Emma looked up.

"What money?"

Nobody answered.

The video continued.

Richard smiled.

Cold.

Controlled.

Dangerous.

And then he said something that made Daniel's face lose all color.

"Make sure Olivia stays quiet. If she talks about what happened in 1998, everything we've built disappears."

Emma's hands began shaking.

"What happened in 1998?"

Olivia slowly closed her eyes.

Because the answer wasn't about hidden family members.

Or secret payments.

Or lies.

It was about a crime.

A crime buried for almost twenty-five years.

And the man responsible was still sitting at the head of one of the most powerful families in the country.

As the video ended, nobody spoke.

Because they all understood the same thing.

The affair had been a misunderstanding.

May you like

But the truth hiding behind it was far worse.

And somewhere across the city, Richard Harper had no idea that the evidence exposing him was finally in Emma's hands.
