Chapter 2 - The Hidden Trap

"What do you mean, Mr. Garrison?" I asked, pulling the truck into the quiet driveway of my private estate on the outskirts of town.

"Derek didn't just forge the deed to the apartment, Thomas," Garrison’s voice rasped through the speaker, crisp and cold. "He filed an emergency petition for temporary full custody of the newborn three hours ago. He submitted a sworn affidavit claiming Sarah suffered a severe psychotic break at the hospital, abandoned the child, and voluntarily surrendered all property rights to pay for her medical debt."

My knuckles turned white against the leather steering wheel. Beside me, Sarah had drifted into an exhausted, fitful sleep, her hand still instinctively guarding her baby.

"He used Dr. Miller’s signature," Garrison continued. "Derek found a crooked resident at Blue Ridge Medical who signed off on a fake psychiatric hold recommendation for ten thousand dollars in cash. If you hadn't found Sarah outside that emergency exit when you did, Child Protective Services would already have a warrant to seize that baby from her arms."

A cold rage, sharper than any blade, settled into my chest. Derek and his mother hadn't just wanted the real estate; they wanted to strip Sarah of her humanity, her dignity, and her child, ensuring she would be too broken to ever fight back in court.

"Get my medical team to the house immediately," I told Garrison. "I want a board-certified pediatrician for the baby and an independent physician to examine Sarah. Document every mark, every sign of exposure to the cold, and run a complete toxicological screen on both of them. Then prepare the injunctions."

"Already on it," Garrison said. "And Thomas? I pulled the land registry records. Lydia didn't just take the apartment. She took out a six-hundred-thousand-dollar equity line of credit against it through a private hard-money lender forty-eight hours before Sarah went into labor. The cash was wired to a private account in Delaware this morning."

"They're planning to run," I said softly.

"They're planning to drain everything and leave Sarah with the debt and a criminal record," Garrison corrected. "They think you're just a retired businessman who won't get dirty. They don't know who you used to work for."

"Let them keep thinking that," I said, looking over at my niece's pale, bloodless face. "Send my security team to the apartment. Don't engage them yet. Just make sure they don't sell or destroy a single item inside."

I parked in front of my home. My housekeeper, Martha, met us at the door with heated towels and a wheelchair. As I lifted Sarah into my arms, carrying her past the threshold into warmth and security, she opened her heavy eyes.

"Uncle Thomas..." she whispered, her voice trembling. "Did I lose him? Did Derek take my baby?"

"Nobody touches this child, Sarah," I swore, looking down into her tear-filled eyes. "I bought that home for you to build a life. Now I am going to turn it into their prison."
