Chapter 3 - The Unraveling Mask

"What?!" Bianca shrieked, backing away toward the kitchen cabinets as the police officers advanced. "Are you insane?! I am the lady of this house! You can't arrest me in my own home! David, do something!"
David stepped in front of the officers, his hands raised in panic. "Wait, wait! Officer, there’s been a mistake! This is a family dispute. My mother fell—she’s confused, she’s elderly—"
"I am neither confused nor falling, David," Eleanor interrupted, her voice ringing clear and authoritative through the room.
Marcus Vance stepped forward, opening a leather briefcase and pulling out a tablet along with a sealed folder.
"Officers," Vance stated professionally, "at precisely 4:12 PM, Mrs. Eleanor Montgomery activated a silent panic distress signal linked directly to my firm and local law enforcement. Furthermore, the estate’s security network recorded the entire interaction in high-definition video and audio."
Bianca’s face went ghastly white. "Security network? There are no cameras in the kitchen!"
"There were no cameras that you were aware of, Mrs. Montgomery," Vance replied coldly. "Mrs. Eleanor Montgomery had a state-of-the-art closed-circuit system installed throughout the property four months ago. The footage has already been uploaded to a secure cloud server and transmitted to the precinct."
Vance tapped his tablet and held it up. The video played clearly: Bianca screaming insults, swinging the heavy metal ladle, and striking Eleanor across the head. It captured the sickening sound of the impact, the soup splashing across the floor, and Eleanor’s quiet, unyielding reaction. It even captured the audio from the living room—the sudden increase in television volume as David deliberately tuned out his mother’s suffering.
The police officers did not hesitate. Within seconds, despite her thrashing and screaming, Bianca’s hands were pulled behind her back and secured in steel handcuffs.
"David! David, stop them!" Bianca screamed, her hair disheveled, tears of rage smearing her makeup as she was dragged toward the doorway. "Tell them to let me go! You coward, do something!"
David stood frozen, looking like a child caught in a storm. "Mr. Vance, please! She didn't mean it! She just lost her temper! We can fix this within the family!"
"There is no 'family' left here to fix, David," Eleanor said gently, stepping closer to her son. She looked into his eyes, searching for any remnant of the boy she had raised, but finding only weakness and ambition. "You sat on that couch and let her bleed me. You let her demean me in the house your father built with his own hands."
"Mom, please..." David begged, his voice breaking. "I was stressed! The business is failing, the investors are pulling out, I have debts everywhere! I couldn't handle another fight between you two!"
"The business is not failing, David," Eleanor said quietly.
David blinked, stunned. "What?"
Marcus Vance opened the sealed legal folder and pulled out a stack of heavy, stamped documents, placing them on the kitchen island right beside the blood-stained silk handkerchief.
"David," Vance said, his voice dropping into a solemn, legal tone. "For the past six months, you believed you were managing your father’s legacy, Montgomery Enterprises. You believed you had secured private venture capital to cover your seven-million-dollar operational deficit."
David’s breath hitched. "I... I did. The Vance Private Trust injected the capital..."
"The Vance Private Trust is entirely owned and funded by your mother, Eleanor Montgomery," Vance revealed mercilessly. "Every debt you accrued through poor management was purchased by her. Every asset your firm pledged as collateral was acquired by her personal estate. And as of 9:00 AM this morning, due to your breach of fiduciary duty and moral turpitude clauses, Mrs. Montgomery has formally executed her rights."
David stared at the documents, his hands shaking violently as he flipped through the pages. His signature was there, but above it sat Eleanor’s name as the sole controlling chairman and legal owner of everything—the firm, the accounts, the patents... and the estate.
"No..." David whispered, collapsing onto a kitchen stool. "No, this can't be... Bianca said..."

"Bianca believed you owned this estate," Eleanor said softly, looking down at her son. "She married what she thought was a wealthy heir, and when she realized you were struggling, she took her frustration out on the easiest target: an old widow she thought was helpless."
Eleanor took a deep breath, her eyes steady. "She was wrong. And so were you."
