Chapter 10 - Coming Home

The front door of our house swung open to reveal a living room transformed.

The four cribs Andrew had started building months ago—the ones that had sat empty and haunting through the darkest days of the hospital stay—were now arranged side by side in the center of the room, draped in pastel blankets of pink, blue, yellow, and green.

Sunlight poured through the bay windows, warming the hardwood floors.

Andrew carefully carried the first car seat inside, followed by the second, third, and fourth.

One by one, we lifted them out of their carriers.

Faith let out a sleepy yawn, stretching her tiny arms toward the ceiling. Oliver blinked his dark eyes against the bright afternoon light. Sophie curled into a ball against Andrew’s chest. And Mia, the tiniest warrior of them all, let out a soft, contented sigh as she rested against my collarbone.

Four healthy babies.

Four distinct heartbeats.

Four miracles breathing under one roof.

Andrew walked over, wrapping his arms around both Mia and me, burying his face in my hair as we stood together looking at the four cribs.

“We made it,” he whispered, his voice trembling with a lifetime of relief and joy.

“We made it,” I echoed, pressing a kiss to Mia’s soft, downy head while feeling the steady, rhythmic warmth of her heart beating against my own.

The EndingThe sun slowly dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in brilliant strokes of gold, amber, and deep violet.

The house was quiet—a quiet that was no longer heavy with fear or hollow with anticipation, but full of the rich, gentle melody of four babies breathing in unison.

I stood by the nursery window, looking out at the sprawling lawn where the evening shadows were stretching long and peaceful. My body still bore the faint, silvery scars of that night—the physical reminders of a battle fought across months and rooms, of a delivery split in two by time and terror, of a mother who refused to let go.

Down in the cribs, a soft rustle sounded.

Faith stirred first, letting out a gentle coo. Instantly, across the room, Oliver answered with a tiny grunt, which prompted Sophie to wiggle beneath her blanket, and Mia to stretch her microscopic fingers toward the air.

Four lives. Four futures. Four souls anchored to this world by love so fierce it had stopped time itself.

I smiled, tasting the salt of a final, victorious tear on my lip, and whispered into the quiet dark:

“Welcome home.”
