Chapter 5 - The Shattering of the Legacy

The moment of truth arrived when Elias placed a tablet on the table and hit play. The footage from The Gilded Oak filled the silence of the dining room. I watched Preston’s face as he saw his wife and his mother plotting.
He didn't scream. He didn't rage. He simply went grey. He looked at Harper, whose hands were trembling so hard her rings clinked against her wine glass. Then, he looked at Eleanor.
"Was it all a lie?" Preston asked, his voice cracking. "The pregnancy? The love? The wedding?"
"It was a business transaction, Preston," Eleanor said, her voice devoid of maternal warmth. "Don't be so dramatic. We were securing your future, and mine."
"My future?" Preston laughed, a sound of genuine madness. "You sold my life! You sold me!"
Harper bolted from the table, trying to run for the door, but Elias stepped in her path. "Sit down, Mrs. Sterling," he said calmly. "The police are already in the driveway."
Eleanor lunged at me, her fingernails clawing at my face, but I caught her wrists. She was a woman unraveling, all the grace and elegance shed to reveal the desperate predator beneath. She shrieked, a primal, ugly sound, as she realized that thirty years of planning had been dismantled in less than an hour.

Preston stood up, walking toward his mother. For a second, I thought he might hit her, but he just stopped, looking at her with a profound, soul-crushing pity. "I loved you," he whispered. "That’s the worst part. I actually loved you."
He turned away, walking out of the dining room without a backward glance. He didn't go to Harper; he went to the front door, leaving the house of lies behind.
