The man who stepped from the lead SUV was Arthur Sterling, the chief executor of the clandestine trust my parents had spent their entire lives protecting. He ignored Ethan entirely, he didn't even acknowledge Margaret’s sputtering indignation, and he walked straight to the puddle of dirty water at my feet. With a gesture of absolute, disciplined authority, he signaled his security team. Four men in dark, sharp suits took positions around the porch, their presence changing the atmosphere of the house from a place of domestic tyranny to a high-security bunker.

"My Lady," Arthur said, bowing his head with a formality that made Margaret’s face drain of all color. "We have been searching for you for six years. The board of the Vane Consortium has been waiting for the signal to initiate the transition. The time for hiding is over."

Ethan, suddenly pale and trembling, stepped forward, his arrogance replaced by a frantic, jagged confusion. "Who the hell are you? You’re trespassing on private property! I’m calling the police!"

"Private property?" Arthur glanced at the sprawling, cold mansion, then turned his icy, unblinking gaze back to Ethan. "Mr. Vance, your entire real estate portfolio is currently being liquidated by a hostile takeover initiated by the Vane family. This house was bought on a loan co-signed by an entity you didn't even bother to research because you were too busy inflating your own ego. You aren't hosting investors tonight. You’re hosting a bankruptcy audit."

I stood there, still clutching my side, the agony of my stitches beginning to fade behind a sudden, surging tide of pure, cold adrenaline.
