Chapter 7 - A Mother's Last Letter

By 5:00 PM that evening, the storm over New York had finally passed, giving way to a crisp, golden sunset that painted the Hudson River in shades of amber and rose.
In the private study of the Vance Estate, a fire crackled quietly in the stone hearth.
Nathan sat behind his desk, holding a sealed yellow envelope that had been retrieved an hour ago from the Zurich safety vault using Sarah’s silver key.
Sitting across from him in a warm yellow sweater was Elelliana. She had been bathed, her hair brushed into neat curls, her face glowing with fresh color. She was holding a warm plate of fresh chocolate chip cookies Mrs. Gable had baked for her.
“Is that from my mommy?” Elelliana asked softly, her eyes fixed on the envelope.
Nathan nodded gently. “Yes, Elelliana. It’s a letter your mother wrote six years ago, when she realized she had to go into hiding.”
Nathan carefully broke the red wax seal on the envelope and pulled out three pages of handwritten paper.
He began to read aloud, his voice soft and steady in the quiet room:
“My dearest Elelliana,
If you are reading this letter, it means I am no longer with you, and that you have found your way to your Uncle Nathan. Never forget that I loved you and your twin brothers with every beat of my heart.
I had to leave the family estate because greedy men wanted to use our name for evil things. But I knew that if you ever found Nathan, he would protect you. He has a hard outer shell, but his heart is bigger than the ocean.
Elelliana, keep the silver key safe. It is not just a key to money; it is a key to a promise. The promise that our family will always stand for truth, no matter how cold the world gets.
Be brave, my sweet girl. Take care of Leo and Noah. And remember that your mother is watching over you in every sunrise.
Love always, Mommy.”
By the time Nathan finished reading, tears were streaming silently down Elelliana’s cheeks. But they were not tears of fear or hunger; they were tears of peace.
She reached across the desk and took the letter, pressing it against her chest as if she were hugging her mother one last time.

“She knew I would find you,” Elelliana whispered softly.
“She knew,” Nathan agreed, wiping a single tear from his own cheek. “And she was right.”
